Odyssey of the 8th Fire
- A New American Epic -

The true tale of a band of pilgrims
who walked across America
under the sky sign of the Whirling Rainbow
and the Algonquin teachings of the Seven Fires

Odyssey of the 8th Fire will tell the true story of a long American prayer walk with Algonquin keepers of the Seven Fire teachings. In 1995-96, over the course of eight months, a group of about 40 people – of all colors and faiths -- walked from the Atlantic to the Pacific. They sought to regain understanding of the fundamental teachings that apply to North America and to the people who share life on this land.

With a degree in journalism from Boston University and 30 years of professional experience, McFadden kept a daily journal during the walk in 1995-96. In the years after the walk he enlarged and enriched the journal so that it might serve also as a compendium of sacred teachings of North America -- as embodied in the stories shared by the learned elders the walkers encountered as they made their way from ocean to ocean.

This epic story of spiritual adventure involves untold U.S. and world history, pressing environmental and social issues, a convoluted web of personal relationships, and spiritual insight with direct relevance for our era.

Because of the nature of the story and the challenges the walkers faced, Odyssey of the Eighth Fire also represents a metaphor for the larger journey – or pilgrimage -- that the whole world is making from an old time to a new time.

McFadden has created a web site for Odyssey of the 8th Fire. He will blog (publish) the developed journal day by day for eight months on the Internet, from June 23, 2006 until February 2007. Simultaneously he will archive the content (text and images) so that it is all easily accessible and searchable.

Readers are invited to come along on the Odyssey of the 8th Fire through the Internet, traveling day by day across America, guided by the ancient teaching traditions of our land.

3. He's been working on it a long time....
I didn't do the walk but met with friends who were walking when they came through AZ and met with some elders also. Its amazing ot me how after 10 years, the walk still even impacts my life!

5. That turtle is doing amazing work!
Lots and lots of transformation happening all around and within. Mr. Crow and I include its maker in our offerings of gratitude routinely. You may recall that the rattle came to mean everything to Mr. Crow in the course of time....(Why is there no "deep gratitude" smiley?? I guess this will have to do:)

6. woh
Would that ever be great fun. . .

Like many I've driven and flown across the country several times. I've always felt every American should cross this country by car or train to just appreciate the vastness and wildly varied nature of this land.

On my first road trip I was just struck by what pioneers in wagons must have had to endure to make it to the "promised land of CA."

Thanks for sharing this DR :) I'll get a tremendous vicarious kick out of it.
