(Happy 87th today to my mother if she were still with us...)
Welcome (I think) to June. Boy are we in for a whammie of a month this time. With the birth of Summer and the New Moon triggering transiting Pluto and Uranus!? All kind of stuff is flying and hitting multiple windmill farms all at once. Pluto is at work on the international, national, local and personal levels. Simply put: don’t ignore what you have to deal with! It will come back to haunt you if you do. Yes, everyone I talk to is doing major house-cleaning in their basements (Pluto.) This cleansing has little to do with Spring either – tis Pluto’s effect clearing out old baggage of all types.
Look what it’s doing to our governmental, financial, and economic institutions! Speaking of which, please enjoy the wonderful new article by my partner, Cheryl Crise this month. She came up with a brilliant follow-up on Pluto’s latest antics covering its initial year and a half in Capricorn.
On the other hand, ladies, it’s time to have your babies! Really! The continuing Jupiter/Neptune/Chiron conjunction in Aquarius along with the transits of Venus and Mars in Taurus is going to grace us with some incredible youngsters born this month.
Have a great month. Enjoy.
Hats Off
For some reason, between the years of 1995 and 2008, while Pluto was transiting the sign of Sagittarius, it was quite common to hear the same theme from many of my clients. They wanted out of their jobs and professions. They got bored and wanted to do something else. Perhaps this is due to the Sagittarian instinct to be free. I’m not sure. Then, as we had “predicted,” I am now finding consistently that folks want to stay put – they want to try to “correct” their respective industries.Since Pluto entered the sign of Capricorn in 2008, the sign of social duty and responsibility, it is striking a very different chord inside collective attitudes. Many people I’ve talked to in the past year no longer feel the need to escape; they want to affect their companies to be one in which they’d be proud to work. Yes, most of us are quite aware of the large-scale decay of modern civilization. How appropriate and perfect it is now that the planet of transformation, Pluto, finds itself in the sign of structure, form and organization.
Hats off to those who are now fighting to make a true difference.
Rough God - by CHERYL CRISE
“There’ll be nobody hiding when that rough god goes riding, riding on in.” - Van Morrison
If, even after reading Richard Tarnas’ essential book, “Cosmos and Psyche,” you think the jury is still out about the validity of astrology, go back to January 25, 2008 and before, and read what astrologers were writing regarding the then-looming transition of Pluto from Sagittarius to Capricorn. To capture the essence of what the next 16 years would be like, astrologers needed to combine the archetypal significance of both Pluto and Capricorn. As it moves slowly through the zodiac (taking 258 years to orbit the Sun), Pluto inexorably transforms whatever it touches in our individual and collective lives. These transformations usually occur at such primal, subconscious, collective levels, that when we are experiencing the process, we have difficulty understanding much of what is happening, let alone why.
Because Capricorn is a cardinal/earth sign, it is a given that during this transit Pluto is generating profound metamorphosis of all of our structures—things we were used to thinking of as immutable: importantly, our institutions, our social systems and belief systems. We also know, given Pluto’s association with primal forces, and Capricorn’s association with the Earth, that Mother Earth herself is a primary focus of these current transformative energies. This major planetary transit happens as we stand on the cusp of the Age of Aquarius. Other significant aspects are also occurring under this umbrella, lending their own significance and influencing the ways in which Pluto in Capricorn is actually rendering itself into our lives.
When Rick and I first penned our thoughts on the subject (www.starself.com/apr08.html) we felt certain it was going to be a really big deal. However, actually experiencing the reality and rapidity of the change in our zeitgeist has been amazing! Pluto stepped into those steel-toed shit-kickers on January of 2008, and got down to its Pluto job with a vengeance. Reflect upon how deeply, and in how many ways, our little world has been shaken up and turned inside out in the past seventeen months.
If you are reading this you can probably count yourself fortunate enough to have decent food and shelter. Even so, your financial foundations are likely quivering, if not crumbling, from the global economic catastrophes that Pluto in Cap has ushered into our lives. The economies of our governments and other institutions are so intertwined that few people in the world remain unaffected by the financial morass in which we unceremoniously find ourselves.
If we follow the economic thread, or pick at random the thread of any other issue that seems to be currently overshadowing our lives, we soon arrive at a ganglion where all threads - poverty, intolerance, war, climate change and countless other causes of suffering - inextricably converge.
Pluto is undeniably a “rough god” (to borrow Van Morrison’s phrase), and Capricorn makes it much rougher - fifteen more years of Pluto in Capricorn is going to be a looong time. And, not to make you nervous or anything, but we do seem to be at a watershed in the evolution of our species and our planet (not likely the end of the world, but undeniably the end of the world as those of us living have known it).
Our species has prevailed for thousands of years with a largely “us vs. them” mindset, competing and conquering, concerned for our own tribe and our own patch of land. And it’s not easy to be philosophical and open-minded, to trust and extend a hand, when such serious matters as we currently face can so deeply impact our very survival. One gets quite a claustrophobic feeling when we realize that our planetary resources are mostly FINITE, that there is NO ESCAPE. Pluto in Capricorn is making sure that we get the message: we must re-vision and re-form the institutions, habits and thought patterns that no longer serve us. WE HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO LEARN TO GET ALONG. And as Plato is commonly paraphrased, “Necessity is the mother of invention.”
The work that Pluto in Capricorn calls upon each of us to do is by nature, very, very difficult. Relationships between family members and friends have been sorely wounded as we each cope with this transition as best we can. Fellow Earthlings continue to suffer and die unnecessarily for want of nutritious food, drinkable water, more accessible health care, just social policies, and the fruits of enlightened diplomacy. At the same time we are trying to birth new ways of doing and being, we must cope with the death of our older, ineffective methods, which are habitual and comfortable. We are scared and nostalgic, and it’s very hard to let go.
These days, I am thinking especially about how our ancestors’ lives were pervaded by a sense of their real connection with the earth, water and sky. Archaeological artifacts speak of their respect for, and collaboration with, the universe that sustained them. As Pluto slowly circles the zodiac and revisits each sign, our species is challenged to re-learn the lessons of, and re-interpret the pertinent zodiacal archetype in ways meaningful to the times. This time, Pluto in Capricorn is telling us to get back to these very basics in a 21st century, high-tech, more socially responsible and more spiritually evolved way.
Back before Pluto in Cap rumbled onto on our 21st century stage, Rick and I hypothesized about both the difficult and the positive developments that it would herald, because the seeds of solution are always intrinsic to the problem, and both are contained in the astrological archetype. We have been greatly heartened at the spontaneity with which antidotes are beginning to materialize out of the collective: countless grassroots efforts disseminating through our electronic media, brilliant individuals emerging and lending their genius, unanticipated opportunities blooming in the gaps created by the hastening decay of outmoded systems, all contributing to the healing, holistic solutions we now so desperately need. So many of us are full of great ideas and enthusiasm for a better future!
Your God wants to work through you! As tough as working with Pluto in Capricorn energies can be, it is immeasurably satisfying. And Rick and I assure you that being personally responsible for yourself, your species and your planet at this particular time in history is immeasurably important for us all.
What’s Up with This?
This current stellium (conjunction of 3 or more planets) which was within ¼ of a degree on May 25, 2009, between Neptune, Jupiter, and Chiron at 26° Aquarius has really been something. I covered much of this rare combination of planets in last month’s issue, but I’m finding out much more as we continue to watch its effects unfold. I’m receiving many phone calls from sensitive people who are wondering “what’s up.” I’m wondering too.
I think it’s fairly simple and obvious to say that we all are now in a new state of consciousness, just as has been written about for so long now. The soothsayers have been correct. It is a new world. Saturn has lost its recent battle to hang on to status quo. It’s time we all started thinking on higher planes. That’s what’s happening – it’s not coming, it’s here – and – we’re just not used to it yet.
The Indelible Stamp of Neptune, Jupiter, and Chiron
As you may have heard, we are now under a major conjunction of 3 planets (called a stellium): Jupiter, Chiron, and Neptune. This cosmic merger will "last" at least all summer but is being felt strongest during its beginning phase which is right now. It represents a nascent, effervescent archetypal paradigm – it’s more than a sign of the times – it’s the status of the “new world” made manifest and it is being “birthed” as we lay witness.
Even though the marriage of these 3 planets was consummated long ago, Chiron didn’t yet “exist.” Astrology shies away from granting credibility to such a “planet/asteroid” because the existence of such is not verified until it has been “eyeballed” through the lenses of a telescope. And, this is true by the way. Computers tell us that Chiron’s whereabouts remains a mystery before the year 650 A.D. Officially it was “discovered” (just like America) or birthed on October 18, 1977. In mythology, amongst his many talents, Chiron the centaur was the first known astrologer. “Coincidentally,” I started to study astrology 2 months later.
In “recent” times, Jupiter, Neptune and Chiron aligned closely in 1881 in the sign of Taurus as the closest all 3 planets neared to was within 4°. This stellium repeated itself in 1945 in the sign of Libra, but the closest the trio got to was 2°. Notably, the three did close to within 10° during the bombing of Hiroshima. A new “mindset” certainly emerged at that time – one that left an indelible stamp. The three recently came close once again on May 25, 2009 as they aligned to within 1/4 a degree (that’s 1/2 of our Moon’s width.) This lineup was at 26° Aquarius – the sign of the collective mind. And 1/4 of 1° = 1 major happening astrologically.
Remember, these 3 massively powerful universal flotillas just recently started to intertwine during late January, 2009, i.e. during the Inauguration! It is no coincidence. There aren't any coincidences. It is a new world – at least symbolically at first.

Sailing, Sailing...Maybe
Most people don’t understand astrology – so I use the following simple example. Due to less than insightful magazine articles and books referring to astrology, many folks simply have the wrong idea as to what astrologers can and can’t do. I’m quite sure many of them say they can do lots…
For example, an astrologer is like a weatherman. We can map what energies are gusting, gathering or weakening, and when their fronts will “hit” where. An natal chart (or radix chart) is a map of these forces only these archetypal essences ebb and flow within us. Many people think I can tell them “If they’ll get that job” or “If that marriage will last.” I can’t, they have free will. But, here is how it works, kinda (metaphorically speaking):
Client: I want to sail to Hawaii, can I go tomorrow? Me: No, most likely not, the currents aren’t flowing towards Hawaii.
(In other words, the client can try to go to Hawaii and just may make it, but it’s highly doubtful and if so would require great amounts of stress and strain. It’s just not with the flow of nature.)
Client: Can I go the day after tomorrow? Me: Maybe. The winds are heading exactly towards Hawaii then! (However, that does not mean that they’ll make it. If I’ve examined their past 9 voyages and found that they’ve tipped over their boat 7 times, the Hawaiian trip becomes less than assured. On the other hand, if they have good experience sailing and have handled their own energies effectively, they’ll probably make it – and it looks good.)
I don’t know any other way to make it sound any simpler – bon voyage.
Extreme Personalities
Abraham Lincoln
February 12, 1809, 6:54am Hodgenville, KY. The chart of America’s greatest president shows why he was so. Sun rising a degree below the Aquarian ascendant (true visionary); Neptune high right at the midheaven with Saturn in Sagittarius (idealistic); Moon in Capricorn in the the 12th house (dedicated, sense of service, reverent, took his duty seriously); Mercury/Pluto in Pisces (deep thinker, aware of his purpose as an instrument); Venus trines MC, Saturn and Neptune (a god to the people); Chiron in Aquarius in the 12th (sacrificed himself for the country). I could go on and on and on. One incredible chart - one incredible man.
Dante
May 30, 1265, 4:33am, Florence, Italy (as I write this on the eve of his 744th birthday.) Inquisitive Durante degli Alighieri, commonly known as Dante Alighieri, was an Italian poet of the Middle Ages. His central work, “The Divine Comedy,” is often considered one of the greatest literary works composed in the Italian language and a masterpiece of world literature. In Italy he is known as "the Supreme Poet." Dante is also called the "Father of the Italian language." Source: Wikipedia
His Gemini Sun opposite Pluto gave him the temptation to explore the dark visions of Hell. His Moon in Sagittarius made him outspoken, along with his Mars/Neptune in Leo - so much so that he was one of the first to ever name names and publicly speak out against the Catholic Church, exposing corruption. In fact, circa 1300, as Pluto transited over his midheaven, he was exiled from Florence. . . . 6/7 Full Moon 17° Sag 07’ 2:12p, T-squares Saturn in Virgo – This is a major lunation that will make us realize the need for more information. The Sun and Moon in Gemini/Sag expresses the lack of knowledge because of the square from ever-demanding Saturn-still-in-Virgo. Thank goodness for the toughness of Saturn’s placement now because it will make us tougher mentally and more backed up by facts. Watch the news media circus (like it’s ever anything else) as sides banter back and forth childishly over the other’s accuracy of reporting. “No, water-boarding is not torture, I just can’t breathe.” (Astrologically speaking: the water-boarding “issue” is dominant in the news lately strictly due to Pluto in Capricorn.)
