Yeah, so how come the other groups/forums for non-whites are so quiet?
Latino Hispanic Group - http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=379

Muslim/Islam Group - http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=359

Native American Group - http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=312

Race/Equality Forum - http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=225

Interracial/Multi-ethnic Relationship Support Group (Our own Bliss_eternal's baby) http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=289

I'm not even going to lie; the only one of these that I even knew about before now was the Race/Equality forum which is way too quiet considering the 2600-pound gorilla that is racism in this country.

Is it because we all stay in the big forums or because, and I'm much more inclined to believe this, the number of racial/ethnic minorities on DU is practically nil?? As I'm sure many of you have noticed, I've been telling every black person and thoughtful white person that I come across about AAIG. Maybe we should encourage other minorities too?

1. Our hispanic/latino population was greater...
...unfortunately, I believe that the immigration debates drove many away from DU. :(
Those discussions were horrible. The xenophobia was astounding. I left du for about a week, after they started using the term, "illegals." :puke:

How does one even address, such dehumanizing ignorance?

HamdenRice mentioned that some (or most) of du's asian population was driven away en masse by some insensitive discussion:

Given all the interracial couples in this forum--maybe I'll just bring those topics here (when they rarely come up).

I'd love to see a regular thread of some sort for glbt's of color (and their allies glbt or hetero). Or a thread of their own w/out the allies (everyone needs a haven of their own, know what I mean?)

Just a place where they can hang out and talk about whatever, w/out fear of being called out as some sort of sell-out to glbt's.
A sanctuary of sorts--just for them. It made me sad to see a few glbt's of color (and a couple of glbt's) say they don't feel comfortable in their designated forum anymore.

2. It's more than a few, Bliss

I can't say that I blame them. We've all seen the hate thrown at the ones who don't "toe the line." You're right, at the very least they deserve a thread (or ten) here in AAIG.

Given all the interracial couples in this forum--maybe I'll just bring those topics here (when they rarely come up).

That's a great idea. And I just think it's pitiful that there cannot be discussions on topics like immigration and the myriad ways that racism affects everyone in America without having people leave the site in droves because of the insensitivity and lack of awareness that these discussions bring out in people. Combined with the day to day ignorance, arrogance and belligerence that is DU and I'm surprised anybody brown still posts here.

3. Where you been? A GLBT Group forum was approved by
the administrators last week (Skinner, I believe, I read)! All they're waiting on is the mission statement. I'm happy as all get out!!! lol!!:bounce:

4. Fire, I love you like a play cousin
but PLEASE don't talk about that here! It's been a few months since the last "swarming" and I for one would sure like to keep it that way.

But for what it's worth, I'm sure you're not  nearly as hard as Skinner. :)

5. I think it's mostly numbers
since most of the above are groups, rather than forums. I don't like Race/Equality because it seems to attract the incredibly and willfully ignorant, closet racists (the in-your-face racists quickly get banned, but most aren't so accomodating) along with some of the worst of.

6. Maybe that's why the Race/Equality forum was created
Edited on Mon Jun-22-09 06:00 PM by Number23
to immediately weed out the seriously bad apples. Hard core racists would be drawn like moths to a flame to that forum.

Look at me suggesting that the only reason the Race forum was created was to weed out racists. I'm such a cynic. :)

I think that the craftier, only slightly less hardcore racists just hang out in the big forums. They can cover their tracks alot easier there.

7. I noticed that, too....

...(about the race/equality forum). :scared:
In the early days of that forum, it also got a lot of disruptors/trolls (that were banned fast).

The interracial/multi-cultural forum wasn't large to begin with. Over time the status of various relationships change, members leave the board (by choice and otherwise) and a rather small group gets even smaller. No biggie. It was fun while it lasted, and definitely educational. Every now and then I find/see something relevant to that area, and post there--but it's been a looooong time. lol.

There are some cool blogs on the topic now. When we started that forum, there weren't many (or any actually).
