Members of 3rd MAW to deploy to Iraq Saturday

More than 200 leathernecks and sailors with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing will deploy Saturday to Iraq’s Anbar province in support of I Marine Expeditionary Force, officials said.

The leathernecks will leave from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., a statement released by the base said. They will replace members of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, which is scheduled to return from Iraq later this month.

The 3rd MAW deployment is part of a larger plan that will replace Camp Lejeune, N.C.-based II Marine Expeditionary Force with California-based I MEF forces, a I MEF statement said.

In addition to 3rd MAW, I MEF’s Iraq forces will include units from the 1st Marine Division and 1st Marine Logistics Group. Marines will primarily deploy to Iraq in two seven-month rotations, with the first rotation moving into Iraq later this month.
