Editorial: Airmen need combatives

Airmen now at Officer Training School are being introduced to the Air Force’s new hand-to-hand combat training program.

Soon, all incoming airmen — officers and enlisted — will receive the same martial arts training, and service leaders plan to extend the program to all airmen in the not-too-distant future.

The Air Force training is based on the Modern Army Combatives Program, but service leaders plan to tailor it to airmen’s needs.

And clearly it’s needed.

Matt Larsen, director of the Army program, told Air Force Times in June that he had documented close to 500 incidents involving hand-to-hand combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.
