Navy using Internet, TV to update public on the trash situation in Italy
Stars and Stripes
European edition, Tuesday, January 22, 2008

As Italian officials try to dig out of yet another trash crisis, Navy Region Europe and Naval Support Activity Naples have posted garbage and health information updates on the Internet and run informational spots on American Forces Network.

Late Saturday, the military’s broadcasting network began airing a joint message from Rear Adm. Michael Groothousen, commander of Navy Region Europe, and Capt. Floyd Hehe.

They reminded viewers of precautions they can take as trash goes uncollected in the Naples and Campania areas.

Officials advise washing children’s toys frequently, washing and rinsing fruit and vegetables before eating them and avoiding burning trash.

The Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center in Portsmouth, Va., has been asked to work with local and national public health officials to evaluate the potential health risks from exposure to substances in the environment.
