The 101st Airborne Division’s 101st Combat Aviation Brigade has uncased its colors at Bagram airfield in Afghanistan, taking over the operational reins from the 82nd Airborne Division’s 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade.

A ceremony marking the transfer of authority took place Jan. 17.

The 101st CAB from Fort Campbell, Ky., commanded by Col. James Richardson, will have responsibility for providing convoy security, medical evacuations and support for ground force operations.

The 82nd CAB, commanded by Col. Thomas Kelly and known as Task Force Pegasus during its deployment, has been in Afghanistan since January 2007 and will redeploy to its home base at Fort Bragg, N.C.

More than 4,000 soldiers with the 82nd Airborne Division’s headquarters and 4th Brigade Combat Team, are scheduled to redeploy from Afghanistan by mid-April, as are some 3,000 soldiers with the division’s 2nd BCT who are on duty in Iraq.
