RAF MILDENHALL, England — A U.S. Air Force airman hit and killed a British man on Sunday as the man walked along a dark stretch of highway a few miles from the air base’s Gate 1, authorities said Tuesday.
A green Dodge 4x4 vehicle collided with Kevin Flatt on the A1065 just north of the Fiveways roundabout. Flatt was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency services were called out at 8:50 p.m., Suffolk police spokeswoman Lisa Crane said.
Suffolk police said the vehicle was driven by an RAF Lakenheath member, but Air Force officials said the driver was assigned to RAF Mildenhall. Mildenhall officials did not provide the airman’s name or rank.
On Tuesday, friends and family members set up a roadside memorial at the site for Flatt, who was 37.
Flatt’s brother, Trevor, fought back tears as he remembered him as a “helpful chap.”
