NEW YORK — After the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Trinidadian immigrant Feyad Mohammed knew he wanted to serve in the U.S. military.

He joined the Army immediately after high school. Over the last four years, he’s done two tours in Iraq, losing two friends and fellow platoon members.

During that time, he applied three times for U.S. citizenship, but each time, the application got snared in red tape.

On Friday, on his fourth try, Mohammed, 22, became a citizen in a ceremony in a Brooklyn courthouse, where a total of 255 immigrants were naturalized.

~snip~

Mohammed, who was honorably discharged from the military in July with the rank of sergeant, hopes to go college and become a New York City police officer. He credits Sen. Charles Schumer for helping him finally become a U.S. citizen.
