V Corps chaplain charged with sexual assault

European edition, Sunday, January 27, 2008

HEIDELBERG, Germany — A V Corps chaplain has been charged with sexually assaulting a soldier in Vilseck, assaulting and threatening a woman in Heidelberg and in Kentucky, and assaulting a Heidelberg military police officer.

Capt. Anthony C. Mastromarino, 44, was charged with the multiple counts on Thursday. He is not in custody, said V Corps spokeswoman Hilde Patton, and is assigned to administrative work.

“He no longer performs ecclesiastical duties,” Patton said.

Mastromarino was assigned to V Corps’ Headquarters and Headquarters Company in August. Before that, the chaplain was assigned to a unit at Vilseck, Patton said. That’s where, in June, he is alleged to have committed forcible sodomy, indecent assault, indecent exposure and fraternization, Patton said, against a male soldier.

The other charges — of communicating a threat and assault — are alleged to have been committed against a civilian woman this month in Heidelberg, and at Fort Campbell, Ky., in 2005, Patton said.
