Iowa Guard unit to deploy to Egypt

A send-off for soldiers from the Iowa National Guard’s Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 109th Medical Battalion, is scheduled for Feb. 6.

The soldiers are preparing for a deployment to the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt as part of the Multinational Force Observer Mission.

The unit, based in Iowa City, will be supplemented by soldiers from at least seven other Iowa Guard units. About 95 soldiers are affected by this deployment.

The soldiers will leave Iowa for training at Fort Lewis, Wash., before going overseas.

Once overseas, the soldiers will provide command and control to various units that provide logistical, medical, aviation and explosive ordnance removal support to theater.
