The water on Kadena Air Base is now safe for drinking and food preparation, officials said Tuesday.

Base residents had been advised Monday to bring water to a rolling boil for at least a minute to kill any bacteria following a waterline break at the corner of Kuter Boulevard and Douglas Avenue.

Residents on Tuesday were “encouraged to flush their water taps for five minutes or until they notice cooler water coming out of the cold water tap,” said base spokeswoman Staff Sgt. Kenya N. Shiloh. “This indicates that water is now pulling from the main waterline and flushing is complete.”

Repair crews were expected to cut power in the Kuter Boulevard and Douglas Avenue area sometime Tuesday afternoon as the waterline break washed out the soil beneath an underground high voltage power line, said base spokesman Scott Hallford.

Crews also were to close parts of Kuter Boulevard at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Shiloh said.
