LAWRENCE, Mass. — Authorities say a Lawrence man forced to resign from the school committee after being charged with faking his military record will plead guilty.
The U.S. Attorney’s office says James Stokes will plead guilty to two misdemeanor charges, including presenting a forged discharge document to Lawrence’s Office of Veteran’s Services in 2006.
The U.S. Attorney said Stokes will also admit to falsely claiming in October 2007 that he’d been awarded a Purple Heart.
He faces a maximum of a year in prison on each charge at his Feb. 12 sentencing.
Stokes, 63, had claimed to be a Marine Corps veteran during his fall campaign for school committee.
