War Deaths Portrayed in Dems' TV Ad
War Deaths Portrayed in Dems' TV Ad
May 01, 2008
Knight Ridder

As the commercial begins, John McCain is explaining that America might need to sustain its presence in war-torn Iraq fully a century.

Then, the Democratic National Committee political ad turns to the graphic carnage of war.

Two American Soldiers, standing beside a palm tree in Iraq, suddenly are blown up by a direct enemy hit.

Republicans were angry on two fronts April 29 after the ad was aired.

First, they vigorously protested that it makes it appear McCain is calling for Americans to be engaged actively in war for 100 years, rather than maintain a presence as the Arizona senator actually said in his full statement.

1. Who's to say the killing will stop......
"McCain is calling for Americans to be engaged actively in war for 100 years, rather than just maintain a presence." This after all is Iraq, we have seen what these people do to each other and if our military is there they will be in danger. You know they always say "what comes around, goes around" Could it be our Higher Power is sending us a message..as in rh price of gas and our tanking economy?

2. Showing American Soldiers being killed by a direct hit.
Yup sure will go over with Joe and Jane citizen in fly over country.

I believe the point can/should be made but, that approach is to crass beyond words.

As a vet I would/am insulted by this approach.

I do not cotton very well to the idea of showing American service men being killed to make a political point.

Consider that they are there doing what they are trained to do and following lawful orders, besides if they are resting by a palm tree and then blown to kingdom come, does that not destroy the image of the bad americans picking on the peaceful Iraqi??

Now I have come to consider that by reading some who post here that they will not really respect our troops (although they claim to) until they mutiny en-mass against Bush et-al.

How would you feel if this was a similar situation and the leadership had a D behind it's name would you then advocate mass mutiny or disregard for lawful orders (BTW if you would I will give you props for being consistent)??

Like it or lump it a standing military is a needed evil in these time.

Iraq was/is a colossal cluster f(*& that never should have been undertaken, there was no respectable reason for it.

Afghanistan was justifiable. We need to get the difference down.

And we need the keep G.I.'s and Marines out of political ads/propaganda.

we have not liked it when the GOP has used it against us in the past, and we should not be doing the same.

Just this Vet's opinion

3. Is this true?
I seem to recall the same footage was used in Fahrenheit 9/11.

I think it was chosen specifically because it is dramatic, but the soldiers aren't hurt at all by the explosion. I don't even think they are knocked down by it.
