Navy's Fleet Plans Face Rough Seas

WASHINGTON - To hear Navy officials tell it, shipbuilders are finally heading for good times.

After dwindling to its smallest size in about a century, the Navy's 279-ship fleet will grow to 313 ships over the next decade.

A new aircraft carrier will be purchased every four or five years, and submarine production will double.

But outside the Navy, who believes it?

Not budget experts, who warn that the billions of additional dollars needed in coming years are unlikely to materialize.

2. Getting more big ships is not a good idea.

We need more small ships to aide in urban warfare, in patrolling small bodies of water and providing protection from terrorist threats with anti-air and anti-ship missiles. Especially since there isn't another navy of our size opposing us. What we really need is more missile boats, torpedo boats, patrol boats, corvettes and probably frigates to protect the ports.
