CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. — New Mexico’s congressional delegation says Cannon Air Force Base will be the new home of the Air Force’s 16th Special Operations Squadron.
The delegation says eight AC-130 aircraft along with crew and support personnel could begin arriving at the eastern New Mexico base in October.
Eventually, the deployment could mean some 600 military personnel and 300 contractor and civilian positions for Cannon by the end of 2009 fiscal year.
Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., says he hopes this marks the first major wave of Air Force Special Operations Command to Cannon over the next few years.
New Mexico’s delegation last year supported legislation that included more than $10 million for military construction projects at Cannon.
