New unit activated at Lejeune

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Marine Corps has activated a new unit at Camp Lejuene.

The 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines was activated Tuesday as part of a push to increase the size of the Marine Corps. The battalion fought at Iwo Jima in 1945 and was the first battalion-sized unit to land in Vietnam in 1965. The last operation was in Somalia in 1992.
