PLAYAS DE ROSARITO, Mexico — A Camp Pendleton-based Marine who was injured when Mexican military officers shot at his car at a military checkpoint near Rosarito has been released on bail by a Mexican judge.

A base spokesman said Marine officials were bringing Pfc. Joshua Kendall Monnett back across the U.S. border Wednesday night. Monnett sustained arms lacerations and an eye injury when the gunfire sent a small piece of glass into his eye, according to Police Chief Jorge Eduardo Montero. Monnett was treated at a Tijuana hospital.

According to Marine 2nd Lt. Ken Kunze, the incident happened around 4 a.m. Tuesday, when Monnett was driving back to Camp Pendleton after visiting a family member who lives in Mexico.

It is not known what prompted the gunfire.
