CLIO, Mich. — An Army Reserve colonel said he isn’t letting a little thing like the war in Iraq stand in the way of serving on his local school board back home in Michigan.

Robert Swartwood is part of the Inkster-based 300th Military Police Brigade and leaves Friday for his second tour of duty in the Middle East.

The 60-year-old lawyer recently was elected to the Clio Board of Education, and he and school officials said they’ve worked out a way for him to participate in meetings even while serving in Iraq.

They say he’ll participate in board meetings by telephone conference call until his expected return in September.

“There’s a job to be done, and that’s the bottom line,” Swartwood told The Flint Journal. “It’s an honor to serve. I don’t mind going back to Iraq. I just got elected in early May, then this deployment came up.
