Abington Knights of Columbus hall won't return Brockton soldier's deposit

ABINGTON— For the second time in two months, a function hall in town is being accused of uncharitable treatment of a soldier.
Army Pvt. Jose Silva of Brockton claims he can't get his $150 deposit back from the Abington Knights of Columbus after he had to change his wedding date. Silva had reserved the hall for his reception on Aug. 25, but then found out he would be called up for duty a week or two before that.
“I was told the only way I could get my money back is if they can rent the hall out to someone else. I was told I was most likely going to lose my deposit,” said Silva, 26, who will head to Missouri for training and may later be sent overseas.
A man who handles bookings for the Abington Knights of Columbus, who would only identify himself as Frank, said the policy is spelled out in the contract.
