Ohio guardsman recruits brother, earns $2K
Ohio guardsman recruits brother, earns $2K
Staff report
Posted : Sunday Oct 14, 2007 9:31:34 EDT

The Ohio National Guard reached its 1,500th recruit under the Guard Recruiting Assistance Program when Spc. Ian Spence enlisted his brother, Alex, and pocketed $2,000.

It was Spence’s fourth referral under the GRAP, according to an Army press release.

Ohio National Guard soldiers across the state have earned more than $3 million since the program’s inception almost two years ago, recruiting from among friends, relatives, classmates and co-workers, the release stated.

The program allows traditional Guard soldiers to volunteer to become recruiting assistants, or RAs, by taking a brief online training course.

~snip~

Alex Spence is a criminal justice student at Cincinnati State and chose to join his brother’s unit, Battery A, 1st Battalion, 174th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, because it would let him stay close to home to finish his degree.

Ian Spence, who has earned $8,000 through GRAP this year, serves as an Avenger team chief. His younger brother will work radar repair upon completion of his military schooling. He ships to basic Oct. 30.

1. Yikes, Talk About Selling Your Brother Out
If anything happens to his brother, how will he be able to live with himself?

4. The same way that the rest of us who have family members in the military do...
By remembering them during the holidays and honoring their decision that removing a man who would toss families into woodchippers was a good thing.

My brother has served for almost 8 years and he has been to Iraq once. He is getting ready to go to Afghanistan next year. Since Feb of 2002, my National Guard unit has also been been called up twice for a total of about 27 months.

6. That is a personal decision that individuals have to make
Personally, I would tell my brother to take the money if he put me in.

11. Having spirit is all well and good...
But if the guy was inclined to serve anyway, should he have deliberately said "No thank you, I won't take the free money"? Kindof nutty, no?
