Sasebo thrift shop opens Nov. 6
Sasebo thrift shop opens Nov. 6

SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan — Thrifty Sasebo sailors will soon be able to shop on the main base for low-priced uniforms, household goods and just about anything else.

A new thrift store is set to open Nov. 6 near the Bayside food court, according to the Officers’ Spouses’ Club of Sasebo, which will operate the secondhand shop.

The Thrifty Treasures store will accept donations the same as its sister location in the Hario housing area and will likely become a clearinghouse for sailors transferring to new duty stations, said Debbie McNutt, the club’s president.

When moving, many sailors have excess personal items that get thrown away, McNutt said.

Instead of going to waste, the belongings can be donated to the new store in Building 301 and sold for a few dollars to others, she said.

“We are really excited, because we are going to be right there in the middle of the base,” she said. “I think we are going to have a whole new segment of people coming in.”
