DETROIT — The remains of an Air Force pilot from Michigan missing since the Vietnam War have been identified and returned to his family, the Defense Department said.
Maj. Robert G. Lapham, of Marshall, Mich., will be buried with full military honors Friday in Arlington National Cemetery, according to a statement released Thursday. On Feb. 8, 1968, Lapham was making a second pass at enemy tanks while flying the lead A-1G Skyraider in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam when he crashed, the government said.
Attempts were made between 1993 and 1998 to investigate the incident and interview witnesses. One team also surveyed the crash site and found aircraft wreckage.
Investigators resurveyed the crash site in 2003, finding additional wreckage and pilot-related evidence, including Lapham’s identification tag, the Pentagon said. Between 2004 and 2006, teams traveled to Quang Tri province four times to excavate the crash site.
