An Army helicopter crashed in northern Italy on Thursday, killing at least five people onboard and injuring six, a fire department official said. The helicopter was attached to the 1st Battalion, 214th Aviation Regiment.

Four bodies were pulled from the wreckage of the UH-60 Black Hawk Army chopper and another six people onboard were injured and sent to area hospitals, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for the national fire department.

The Army said one of the injured people later died.

Names of the victims are being withheld until authorities notify their next of kin.

Senior Airman Justin Weaver, a spokesman at the Air Force base in Aviano, near Venice, said he had no confirmation on the number of deaths but that the chopper had taken off from Aviano.

ANSA said the chopper was carrying 11 people when it crashed in the countryside outside of Treviso, in the uninhabited area of St. Lucia di Piave, about 25 miles southwest of Aviano, which in turn is about 70 miles northeast of Venice.
