An early morning fire Sunday in a barracks room at Fort Drum, N.Y., caused significant damage to three rooms, the Army announced in a press release.
The fire took place in a building housing the 10th Mountain Division’s 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment. One soldier was treated at the scene and released back to the unit, the press release said. Six soldiers were displaced by the fire and relocated to alternate housing.
Fort Drum firefighters were first on the scene. After gaining access to the first floor they found one soldier face down in a barracks room.
“The initial report was of several soldiers trapped in the first floor of the building,” Fort Drum Assistant Fire Chief Jason Brunet said in the release. “We were met with heavy smoke on the first floor.”
Fort Drum emergency services were first called at 4:30 a.m. to respond to a fire in a barracks room in the 10600 block off 5th Armored Division Drive on the installation’s North Post.
Calls for mutual aid were placed and fire crews from Watertown, Carthage and Black River fire departments. Ambulances from Evans Mills, Black River and Guilfoyle also responded.
