Investigations by agents from the Air Force Office of Special Investigations netted 495 insurgents captured or killed in Iraq and Afghanistan in fiscal 2007, according to a senior OSI official.
Agents also identified 3,829 threats against Air Force assets or bases during the same period, the official said.
And during the first two months of fiscal 2008, OSI investigations led to 109 insurgents captured or killed and 676 threats identified.
OSI has about 250 agents deployed at any given time in support of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Agents are located at all air bases in the region and work in detachments of eight to 15 agents.
Their primary responsibility is to investigate and gather intelligence about threats to Air Force bases. Those threats include rocket and mortar attacks, roadside bombs and infiltration by insurgents and terrorists.
Small numbers of agents perform other duties in theater, such as manning protective details for American officials and working in the U.S. Central Command intelligence directorate.
