House Armed Services panel fills vacancies
House Armed Services panel fills vacancies

The House Armed Services Committee has filled two vacancies, one for each political party.

Rep. Niki Tsongas, D-Mass., who will serve on the military personnel and strategic forces subcommittees, fills an opening left by the resignation earlier this year of Rep. Martin Meehan, who represented the same congressional district.

Meehan, who had served as chairman of the oversight and investigations subcommittee, left Congress to become chancellor of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.

Tsongas is the widow of Paul Tsongas, a former member of the House and Senate who ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1992.

The new Republican on the committee is Rep. Doug Lamborn of Colorado, who fills a vacancy created by the death of Rep. Jo Ann Davis, R-Va.

Lamborn, whose congressional district includes Colorado Springs, is also a member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee. He was assigned to the readiness and seapower subcommittees.

uhc comment: According to wikipedia, "Lamborn has accumulated a conservative voting record. Congressional quarterly said that through the first August recess, Lamborn had voted against the Democratic agenda in the U.S. House more than any other Republican."

During her campaign, Tsongas refused to take Iran off the table. Many of us in MA were disappointed.
