Marine Corps to retire several lieutenant colonels
Stars and Stripes
Mideast edition, Thursday, November 22, 2007

The Marine Corps is looking to retire some lieutenant colonels on active duty who support the Reserve, a Corpswide message said.

The move affects “Active Reserve” lieutenant colonels.

They are officers who serve in a support role for the Reserve, such as acting as liaisons between the active-duty and Reserve force, a Corps spokesman said.

Under a new policy, Active Reserve O-5s who have twice failed to be promoted and have more than 20 years of experience will be separated next September, according to a Marine Corps Administrative Message.

The policy was prompted by the fact that the Corps is expected to have more Active Reserve lieutenant colonels that it needs.

There are about 100 Active Reserve O-5s right now, about eight of whom could be affected, the Corps spokesman said.

1. Can someone interpret this for us?
Are they just trying to cut out unnecessary salaries?

3. No--they don't need them, they've earned a retirement, so it's so long Charlie.
Up or out. They've got ninety two billets for these types of guys, and they have a hundred guys.

The ones who have been passed over twice for Bird Colonel are getting the old axe.

Don't worry, they've enough time in to get a decent retirement. They won't starve.

2. Well, that's a sign that the war might be winding down, right there.
If they were gonna keep this shit up, they'd put 'em in Casualty billets or some schmucky job.

If we can get this police action wrapped up, you're gonna see an awful lot of surprised service personnel out on the street and out of work. There will be more than a little "right sizing" happening...
