Former Marine turned contractor dies in Iraq

MERIDIAN, Idaho — A former Marine who was employed by a British security company died in Iraq on Sunday during an accident while escorting a convoy.

Dane Mortensen, 23, had been employed by the private company for just 24 days when the accident occurred, according to his father, Rick Mortensen.

Dane Mortensen joined the Marines in 2002 after graduating from high school. He served four years, including a tour of combat duty in Iraq and was honorably discharged.

Relatives say they have planned a memorial service Friday in Meridian.
