Autopsies planned for Fort McHenry sailors

Local police and Navy criminal investigators continue to look into the New Year’s Day deaths of two U.S. sailors in Tema, Ghana.

Engineman 1st Class (SW) Patrick Brendan Mack, 22, of Warren, Mich., and Engineman Fireman Lonnie Lee Davis Jr., 35, of Riverdale, Ga., were found dead in a hotel room while on liberty. Both were assigned to the Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, Va.-based dock landing ship Fort McHenry.

Lt. Patrick Foughty, a public affairs officer at Naval Forces Europe in Naples, Italy, said Mack and Davis will be flown to Germany for autopsies. Toxicology tests will be performed as part of that examination, he said.

“There’s an investigation, and it’s ongoing,” Foughty said. “There’s no immediate evidence of foul play.”

The Fort McHenry is on deployment to western Africa as part of the “Africa Partnership Station” to build up maritime security and cooperation with nations in the Gulf of Guinea region. The ship previously spent Christmas in Takoradi, Ghana.
