Kerry: Iraq Visit Helped Focus His Views

Sen. John Kerry said meeting with American and British troops in Iraq on Saturday helped clear his thoughts about what needs to be done to stabilize the country and he looked forward to hearing ideas from Iraqis.

Kerry, the Democratic nominee for president in 2004 and possibly a future contender, conferred Saturday with U.S. and British officers in the southern city of Basra and with American troops in Diyala province during a nine-day Middle East tour.

``Today was very informative and very helpful in crystallizing some of my thoughts insofar as what we can negotiate ... and what needs to be accomplished,'' Kerry told The Associated Press by telephone.

``I certainly learned more about what the troops can or can't achieve,'' he said.

(snip)

Kerry declined to elaborate on how the visit affected his views on Iraq because his meetings continue Sunday. He is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki for a firsthand assessment on ``what's possible in the political dynamics.''

1. I certainly don't expect anyone to know the answer, but a bit of
spirited opinions might not be a bad thing. And I await Senator Kerry's opinions, and pray he gets out of that hellhole in tact.

3. the place is indeed too dangerous for Senators
But it's where we send the 18, 19 and 20 year old fresh recruits though. If it's too dangerous for Senators, then why are we sending our kids there?

4. Thanks for putting that in perspective. I'm ashamed now.
I worry about my friend, Senator Kerry, but I worry about all of them and this needs to stop sooner rather than later.

5. It's dangerous for senators, far worse for soldiers who unlike

the senators, must drive on IED infested roads with insurgents waiting in the shadows for them, and the worst of all for ordinary Iraqis who don't get to leave unless they have the means to do so and a good connection for a visa. They are terrorized in their own neighborhoods where they grew up, and are forced to accept help from terrorists and gangs in order to get "protection". That's the hierarchy of danger.

The only way Sen. Kerry's views on Iraq will change is that he'll go for an even faster schedule of getting our troops out of there. That's my opinion.

6. I know we're guessing, but I am of the same opinion. Senator Kerry
will come home and say loud and clear, time to go.

7. Well, ya know, that darn Kerry guy
He's out of control, he always speaks before he thinks, he never listens to the troops, he's a flip-flopping chickenlips who just sits back in his fancy house on the hill eating French bonbons instead of doing the peoples' business.
