THE CASE FOR FLIP-FLOPPING
THE CASE FOR FLIP-FLOPPING
When Resolve Turns Reckless

By John F. Kerry
Sunday, December 24, 2006; Page B01

There's something much worse than being accused of "flip-flopping": refusing to flip when it's obvious that your course of action is a flop.

I say this to President Bush as someone who learned the hard way how embracing the world's complexity can be twisted into a crude political shorthand. Barbed words can make for great politics. But with U.S. troops in Iraq in the middle of an escalating civil war, this is no time for politics. Refusing to change course for fear of the political fallout is not only dangerous -- it is immoral.

2. Thanks, GV -
That was bracing!!

Found this in my morning's Political Wire email:
http://politicalinsider.com/2006/12/is_electability_passe.html

December 20, 2006
Is "Electability" Passe?

...It would be folly to assume that the 2008 race is in the bag for Democrats. But if the national mood is in the Democrats favor, shouldn't Democrats use this opportunity to find a candidate based on their own criteria, not the assumed criteria of others?

This is an especially vital question given the horrendous track record of Democrats in judging the relative electablity of their own candidates. It seems hard to believe today that flip-flopping John Kerry was considered a better general election option than anti-war Howard Dean or southern, articulate John Edwards. Kerry argued strenuosly that his war record would be an asset and said that if Republicans dared to attack his patriotism, he'd taunt them to bring it on. That worked about as well as Bush's taunts to the Iraqi insurgents.

Party stalwarts somehow believed in 1988 that Mike Dukakis was their most electable option and convinced themselves that Mondale would do better than Hart.

If current trends continue -- the U.S. stays in Iraq, the war continues to go badly, John McCain solidifies his hold on the GOP but slowly bleeds away independents -- any number of Democratic candidates will be electable in 2008. Given the fact that this is likely to be the strongest Democratic field in decades, it might be time for the party to search for a new criteria for picking a candidate.

The best President.

-- Dan Conley

Kerry's op-ed is an interesting counterpoint to this, isn't it? Conley is no big JK fan, for sure - if I recall correctly, he might have been a Clark supporter - and his reasoning is more than a bit suspect. But I like his conclusion.

3. This is fantastic!
This read like a speech, with pissed off Kerry (my favorite) delivering it. I challenge any of the other potential '08 candidate (D or R) to speak as clearly about the situation in the entire Middle East and what needs to be done to help solve the problems, as Kerry has done here.

GV, please post this in GD or GD-P!

7. Wow! That is excellent
This is completely amazing from the case made on Iraq to the historical analogies. This sounds as good as the Faneuil Hall Dissent speech read. This is why we're here.

12. I would like to hear variations of this simple statement
from every Democrat:

I'd rather explain a change of position any day than look a parent in the eye and tell them that their son or daughter had to die so that a broken policy could live.

That is the very core of why this war is immoral. Sen. Kerry is asking, in the editorial, Cindy Sheehan's simple question, "What noble cause?" What steps have been taken to make sure that everyone on all sides of this war are doing everything they can to end the bloodshed, incluidng talking to all sides? Why can't America's leaders keep this foremost in the discussions instead of the insulting description of the effort as 'doubling-down' with other's people's lives?

Bravo! These are wonderful words.

15. Excellent piece
He built the perfect case for talks and communication as a means to peacful resolutions. He's right about 3 civil wars, I'd never really thought about it. It'll get worse if we keep using this militarist attitude to every terrorist problem that shows up too. We really have to get back to talking to people and getting the people in this country to start listening.

20. Um, guys, Kimberly Stone just rec'd the diary. Remember her?
She was the one so offended by "Kerry supporters" and took every opportunity to bash Kerry. I'd say with her vote, Kerry hit this one out of the park. People just needed to hear his words.

25. even Kimberly Stone
It is an incredible op-ed from an amazing person. I hope that this moves some people to think about the war - even if they still don't like the messenger. His comments on Vietnam are remembered over all others - sad that this may be the second war he leads on getting people to accept reality.

this is why we need more courage from the Democrats and we need them to speak up strongly, as Sen. Kerry did in that Editorial:

Post at Liberal Values:

The post both discusses Kerry's article, commending him for turning around the flip flop charge, but also shows reviews Kerry's position at the start showing he's no flip flopper.

I don't want to sound snarky, but this editorial made DU's home page, something that doesn't happen all that often where Kerry is involved. I was shocked, I tell ya, in a very good way!

A diary on it was listed on top of recommended diaries when I checked Kos earlier, and my Liberal Values post on it was listed as a featured post on Memeorandum for a while this afternoon.
