Apologies to beachmom, who I know likes Warner, but this makes me a little sick.

June 12, 2006 | LAS VEGAS -- If the 2008 Democratic presidential primaries were held tomorrow, former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner would easily win the contest for the best party planner. To date, no other candidate has rented an Elvis impersonator to perform for supporters in a circular viewing station 1,000 feet above the Vegas strip. And no other candidate has tried to ply voters with the deadly trifecta of a vodka-chilling ice sculpture, a chocolate fondue waterfall, and free roller-coaster rides.

But there was Warner on Friday night, looking, as one blogger commented, like a cross between John Kennedy and Richie Cunningham of "Happy Days" as he danced between two Blues Brothers' impersonators at the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino. At a reported cost of around $50,000, Warner had rented out the highest bar in Vegas to entertain the nearly 1,000 bloggers and online activists who were in town for YearlyKos, a conference sponsored by the largest online community of Democrats in the country...

It was old-time retail politics for a new digital age. "This is the new public square," Warner told the crowd in a five-minute address. "This is the new form of democracy."

<...>

But no one could compete with Warner, who chose to treat the emerging and ill-defined world of liberal blogging like a major union or corporate trade group. He brought nearly a dozen staffers, including his political action committee's five-person "Internet team," and a camera crew to follow his movements throughout the Riviera Hotel, for later online broadcast. When conventioneers checked in, they were given a goodie bag with a laminated invitation to the Warner party conspicuously swinging from the handle. At Saturday's lunch, where Warner showed his standard slick biographical video and delivered his entrepreneur-turned-Virginia-governor stump speech, each attendee got a black T-shirt, emblazoned with Warner's digitally enhanced mug and the words "YearlyKos," as if he had sponsored the event...

Check the link in the post for further description and warped commentary. I set the commentary straight in my post.

3. Good grief. That's a bit much...
However; I am intrigued by Warner's five-person internet team. Anybody know if Kerry has something like that?

4. I think I may have been in a tussle with one last week here at DU,
or at least a versed representative. The person was a patronizing smug suggesting that Kerry may have a place in the party leadership, but we needed a new face to move the Democrat party forward.

5. On the other hand
It's nice that some "regular folk" got a taste of what is usually reserved for the monied interests. Why should the actual voters be treated like red-headed step-children anyway.

6. Good point, Sandy
This is only in poor taste if it NEVER occurs. From what I hear both Republicans AND Democrats are treated to lavish parties thrown by large corporations during their prospective conventions. The only difference seems to be that Democrats are more embarrassed by it than the Republicans who brazenly flaunt their ties with corporations. It is kind of weird that it's the CANDIDATE instead of special interests groups doing it. Is this normal for candidates to do? Do JK and THK throw lavish parties for interests groups? The only thing I have read is the dinner parties they have sometimes at their Georgetown house with different types of people attending. But really, it's pretty classic stuff. No roller coasters or Elvis impersonators.

I haven't read Ron's post yet, but I will tell you there were a LOT of Kossaks grumbling about this. Say what you will about them, they're not stupid and most of them saw totally through this display.

Whometense -- don't worry about me in regards to Warner criticisms. I think he was an excellent governor, and over all a good guy. That doesn't mean that he's above criticism. This Yearly Kos thing struck me as tacky, plus I don't like his position on Iraq. He may be president one day, but I think he is making some mistakes here; '08 will be his learning curve year. After all, he tends to fail first (in business and in politics) before succeeding. I do hope, however, that he joins the Democratic administration in '08, because I think he has a lot to offer, with his technocratic skills.

7. Oh I understand the grumbling
I come from that tradition where opulent displays of wealth are "unseemly". From what I recall, candidates do generally have hospitality rooms at conferences, not like this though. What they do at private union or special interest conferences, I've got no clue. This was definitely over the top and misses the mark about what the grassroots are all about. Still, if this is what candidates do for those other special interests, maybe Mark Warner was just trying to treat bloggers the same way. I'd sure like to hear the thinking behind it at least.

8. You know I just re-read your first post, and maybe we SHOULD
take a step back on all of this. After all, the Boston bloggers got treated to drinks and food by THK (although it was more last minute and obviously more low key). It's only a problem if you become endeared to someone but don't really believe in them, yet because of that personal encounter, you hold back blogging criticisms. Knowing the Kossaks, that ain't gonna happen. If I was there, I would have a) DEFINITELY gone to the Warner party, b) talked to him about our common home (Vernon, CT), c) complimented his tenure as governor, d) ate the food, had a drink, and enjoyed myself, and e) kept my integrity to tell the truth as I saw it.

As far as the tackiness goes, well, maybe it was just Warner doing the "When you're in Rome" Las Vegas schtick. Not my style, really, but it would have been interesting. Just as some extra info, Mark Warner got elected guv here in part by going with the culture of the places he visited -- he sponsored a NASCAR car, had a blue grass band that played at his rallies; in short, he tried to make rural Virginians feel at home and talk to them where they were at (but not being phony, though), instead of making them feel uneasy in a formal, suit and tie way. So, he did that in Las Vegas with a group of bloggers who are a bit trendier in many ways than the average American. Maybe we shouldn't underestimate him . . .

9. He didn't get rich being stupid
That's for sure. I particularly like the blue grass festivals.. because I suggested music and food festivals as an alternative way to meet and connect with southerners in 2004. :)

10. Oh Hell, he can throw a party! That really qualifies him to be Prez.
Can you imagine the inauguration ball? Frat parties every night on the White House lawn. Elvis in Oval Office for a photo op with the POTUS gets my vote.

Sorry, Senator Kerry. I'm going to have to vote for Mark Warner. You bring us years of experience and intelligent positions on the issues but Warner gives us the Blues Brothers! :sarcasm:

You go, Mr. Prez DUDE!

16. The only thing he forgot were the cheerleaders.
Rah Rah!

This "party" reminds me of those dumb high school movies where the rich kid is running for class president and tries to buy everyone's vote.

Your slogan is perfect! (btw, you know what kewl rhymes with)

12. A lot of Kossacks found it creepy
There was a prominent diary about it. They thought Warner was far too obviously trying to butter them up.

13. I saw at least one diary where there was scarcely a kind word for him.
It may well be that the bloggers like Kos will find that their importance is that they provide the forum, but can't control the information or people's reactions. The net may be genuinely democratic and less hierarchal than MSM.

14. Then
Kos had a diary trying to convince them that they've been complaining about the lack of attention ans now are complaining because they don't like the attention. Yes, Kos thinks spending money is the same as listening!

17. I hadn't seen that
That is funny - it seems that Kos wants to be pandered to. Maybe because he seems to not have any real ideological priciples, that's the attention he wants.

18. What makes this funny
is that Kos and his kossacks expect every single Democratic politican to kiss their asses but then when one does, they don't like it. I'd say many times before if I ran for office, I'd stay the hell away from Kos.
