Kerry's speech at TBA

Kerry me home

John Kerry is still running for President ... against HRC.

Coming in he got a lot of love from the crowd. His has been the most war-themed talk of all this morning's speeches, with an introduction by a veteran, Captain John Powers, who served in Iraq and began talking about his work against the Vietnam War. Patriotic dissent is the theme and the audience is eating it up.

I follwed Kerry pretty extensively during the primaries in New Hampshire, and like the rest of us got my fill of Kerry in 2004 (I think he's gotten better speechwriters since then, or maybe it's the absence of Bob Shrum, or maybe because he's so comfortable being honestly anti-war as he was in the beginning of his political career). My take on him was that he's a good legislator but a bad politician. I'm surprised by how popular he is here. He is also the best speaker of the morning (and more believable, I think, than HRC or Pelosi). (We knew that already)

Kerry also got a huge ovation for a (thinly) veiled attack on HRC: "It's not enough to argue aboutt the logistics, or argue about the details, or the manner of complex execution. It is essential to acknowledge that the war itself was a mistake. ... it was wrong, and I was wrong." Somone in the back yelled "No Hillary!" soon after. Another ovation came when he called for "a hard and fast deadline" for troop withdrawal.

John Kerry 2008 doesn't seem as dead on arrival as expected, if the progressive audience's numerous ovations here today are any indication.

Brief "Hurray for New England" moment: John Kerry pronounces idea "idear."

5. I would guess - this is great though
from the "bad politician" (kind of laughable as there will be less than 10 people at absolute maximum who get the nomination for President in his generational cohort - so it's hard to believe he won with neither huge media or party support. Not to mention that with a functional Ohio party, this bad politician would be President) and the comment of having his fill of him in 2004, this is grudgingly a very good review.

Also, I know Kerry, like all other politicians has speechwriters, but Kerry clearly has the dominant input. His speeches do not sound like anyone else's and the sentences sound like those he wrote even in the 70s and they sound a lot like he speaks. I think he hits it on the head that he's more comfortable being anti-war. In fairness to Kerry, to win 2004, he couldn't have sounded like this then.

4. Me thinks this is a preview of the next 2 years
All of these people who have written Kerry off as someone who had their chance are in
for a huge awakening. :)!

Anyone have an idear what time Kerry will be on the Senate floor?
I'm going to be spending most of the day visiting my dad, and would like to
run home or at least set up the dvr when he will be on.

15. Look for that floor speech on Thursday
There are Senate stuff that are holding it back. It can be introduced on Thursday and that is when any speeches would probably come.

8. C-SPAN airing of speech?
They showed yesterday's TBA proceedings (about 3 hours worth) on C-SPAN 2 this morning at 5. I'm hoping they will show today's speeches sometime in the wee hours tonight!

12. those who voted for him the last time deserve it, but
as for the others...well, it would be great to say "we told you so!!" when he becomes a wonderful president!

If there can be a "new" Al Gore, why not a "new" John Kerry--the same one but this time with a public image that reflects the real man. If people need to think he's different to vote for him, fine--I'll take that vote!

10. This is very good.
JK's on the right side of this and Hillary is on the wrong side: a majority of people feel this war was a huge mistake.

Whether or not it leads to him running again, it is good for the party--although I really hope he does.

16. That speech ****rocked*****
I am glad to see this bloggers mention that it was the best of the conference.

Sen. Kerry spoke last. We saw Marvin come out and stand-in so they could adjust the podium for the height-enhanced. (Marvin got a round of applause. So then, I guess, they knew where the Marvin fan club and probably the Kerry fan club was sitting.)

The Senator came out to a good welcome. (I think a lot of people stood for it. Loud and raucous.) He just connected with the crowd. It was a great, great event. (Another pleasure to sit through.)
