John Kerry at the Take Back America 2006 Conference
John Kerry at the Take Back America 2006 Conference
June 13th, 2006 @ 10:53 am

John Kerry spoke at the Take Back America 2006 Conference in Washington, D.C. this morning. The following is the transcript of his speech as transcribed by Congressional Quarterly:

SPEAKER: U.S. SENATOR JOHN F. KERRY (D-MA)

KERRY: Thank you very much.

Listening to John Powers, I’ve got to tell you, you just are filled with a wonderful sense of the goodness of the folks who are over there.

The troops who are there are incredible, every single one of them. And they’re doing an amazing job under the most difficult circumstances.

(APPLAUSE)

And John Powers is remarkable in even more ways, because this young man is working with the 61 percent of the children in Iraq who are under the age of 25, 50 percent under the age of 18 and 40 percent under the age of 14.

And he knows that if there isn’t some real effort to give them a future, they’re going to go out and learn in madrassas how to hate and strap themselves with explosives. And this will go on and on and on.

(APPLAUSE)

Captain Powers has just recalled that day 35 years ago this spring when I testified before the Foreign Relations Committee and demanded an end to the war that I had returned from fighting not so long before.

Let me state again, clearly: It was right to dissent from a war in 1971 that was wrong and could not be won.

(APPLAUSE)

And now, in 2006, it is both a right and an obligation for Americans to stand up to a president who is wrong today, dissent from policies that are wrong today and end a war in Iraq that weakens the nation each and every day we are in it.

(APPLAUSE)

I believe now, just as I believed then, that the best way to support the troops is to oppose a course that destroys their lives, dishonors their sacrifice and betrays both our interests and our ideals.

I believe now, just as I believed in 1971, that it is profoundly wrong to think that fighting for your country overseas and fighting for your country’s values at home are somehow contradictory or even separate calls to service.

"Now, I understand fully that Iraq is not Vietnam. After all, President Bush is even there today."

2. Sen. Kerry rocks the room at the TBA conf.
The Senator had a phenomenal reception at this event. It was, to date, the best speech of the conference, my own prejudice be damned. That man rocked the joint. He was interrupted with applause dozens of times and he got numerous standing ovations.

He owned the place this morning. There have been a lot of people who were lukewarm to the good Senator in the past who went out of their way to tell the 'Kerry people' here how outstanding a job he did. Again, he rocked the joint.

One particular place for applause was when Kerry said that the war was wrong and he was wrong for voting for it. That got about a two minutes standing, raucous, loud, whistling reception. He hit every mark today. This was, hands down, the most energetic moment of the whole event. Bar none.

Damn, he was 'on.' (And we were all in the second and third rows. Great pics to come.)

3. That sounds really really fantastic.
I'm jealous of the second and third row seats! He really has been on. How many of these fantastic speeches with energy and applause before we see an end to the articles that he can't connect or that no one likes him.

4. Kerry Spokesman on Karl Rove’s Smear of Murtha, Kerry
Below is a statement from Kerry’s chief spokesperson, David Wade:

“The closest Karl Rove ever came to combat was these last months spent worrying his cellmates might rough him up in prison. This porcine political operative can't cut and run from the truth any longer. When it came to Iraq, this Administration chose to cut and run from sound intelligence and good diplomacy, cut and run from the best military advice, cut and run from their responsibility to give our troops body armor, and in November, Americans will cut and run from this Republican Congress.”

10. I just was there a few minutes ago,
and I was very pleased to read a post from someone about our Dear Senator. He's not one of us yet, but I think he will be. He was there for the speech and was "moved to tears" I responded to him and invited him to come on over and learn more about why we love JK, and are so devoted to him. I would post the link, but don't know how??!! duh.......go to GD y'all, and click on anything about Kerry and I'm sure you'll find it. I do hope CSPAN will show it eventually, so that more Democrats may see "the light at the end of the tunnel" That , as I recall was the title to his post!! Love ya all!! DC

11. Thanks.
Thanks for the links. I listed at work - it was a great speech.

I am glad to see that Kerry is now against the war - listening to his speech in 1971 while he was running for president was one of the main things that made me like him so much and made me want him to be president. I think listening to him standing up for what is right and fighting on the side of the soldiers in Iraq makes him particularly inspiring. I think it's important to have a president who knows what it is like to be in a war that most likely can't be won.

12. Nice to have you back!
It was an incredible speech. He owned that crowd, just owned it. People were loudly expressing their approval and there were quite a few standing ovations. The Senator from Massachusetts did a 'wicked, wicked good job.'
