Imus - Tuesday; 6/20 --Kerry on at 7:29 Eastern
Edited on Mon Jun-19-06 12:18 PM by cmnh
From the Imus Newsletter:

At 7:29 am eastern we'll be joined by Senator John Kerry (D) Massachusetts. We're going to see where things stand with the Senator... is he ready to make another bid for the White House in 2008? Does he still have the desire and drive for another grueling campaign? Why would the outcome be different? What about Hillary, is she a threat? Meanwhile, what about the issues of the day...Kerry's amendment to withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq by the end of the year got put aside by the Senate last week, how long will our troops have to stay the course? What does Kerry think about the President's surprise visit to Iraq? Al-Zarqawi's death? And what would he do if he were in charge? Will also chat with the Senator about Karl Rove being cleared in the CIA leak investigation and the latest offensive in the U.S. cracking down on illegal immigrants.

I just hope Imus is more lucid and less cranky than the last time Kerry called in.

5. Kerry at his best -"I’m tired of their mistakes …I’m tired of their lies"
Seriously, he was REALLY fantastic ... I'm looking forward to hearing more later today

He talked about Iraq, lost votes in Ohio, Guantanamo Bay, immigration, AND 2008 (Biden, Dodd and ... he hasn't decided yet)

12. Also Change to suceed
He is right that the Republicans convert things to slogans. "Lie and die" is pretty tough.

He mentioned the book he's writing with Teresa. Given the topic, I wonder if Teresa will be with him on Monday. (Also, why does Imus feel the need to ask about their relationship as he does every time?)

Whatever the issue..."I'm on it!"

Paraphrased: Biden was agreeing with me even though he didn't know it!

11. I liked the Biden part too
He said that Biden says they may soon be at the point of no return. He frames his plan as "getting tough"

Oddly, given the expected Rove et al attacks joined by the lapdog media, it shows more courage to speak the truth as Murtha, Kerry, Feingold etc have done.

13. In his 2005 speech,
Biden said Iraq wasn't going to be a democracy anytime soon. He contradicts himself all the time.

16. He contradicts himself even within the same speech!
sometimes he weaves back and forth so often that it makes me dizzy. He's clearly a smart guy but he's incredibly unfocused. It may not be fair, but I kind of see him as having no core, nothing that is really him and from his heart. Anyone who would choose to use a very personal speech to define himself that was plagerized from someone else is pretty lacking in integrity, especially as some details weren't true (for him).

19. I'll try to re-watch this later so I can give you the whole thing
But essentially JK said that he and Biden aren't all that far off in their approach for Iraq. If you read all of Biden's argument, he ends up agreeing with JK. I liked what he said about Biden (A) Because it unifies the democrats and (B) Says that Biden is NOT the best person to be speaking for the democrats because he obviously isn't representing his position clearly.

27. The exact quote
KERRY: Yes, but if you listen to Joe, I actually read the transcript later because I heard something about it. And he wound up basically agreeing with me without agreeing with me. I mean, he says we're perilously close to the point of no return. What happens when you get to the point of no return? I mean, some of us have a judgment that, you know, the best way to succeed is to get tough. I think you've got to get tough. Our troops are over there under the toughest circumstances.

15. This was a very good interview today. He was fired up and spoke
with passion and conviction. Damn, the more I repeat, "Lie and Die" the angrier I become with this Bush administration. He seems to be taking on Rove too with this short and to the point talking point, even if the other "yellow" Dem's are afraid to take on the ridiculous claim of "Cut and Run" baloney right now.

33. ha-ha He'd likely sink the boat
I seriously doubt he could have very quickly won the respect and faith in his leadership that Kerry did with both of his crews. It's amazing that Kerry did with his second boat because it sounds like they were pretty traumatized by the attack that injured Kerry's predisessor. (The loyalty is utterly amazing. Consider that Del S. chose to call Kerry 30 years later when he was on the verge of suicide. It meant he both wanted help and 30 years later the person he most trusted was a man he knew for probably 2 months. It's certainly against the RW stereotype - Del was basically on the streets, had no connections, nothing and Kerry got actively involved in helping him. There was no way Kerry could have predicted it would have paid off.)

34. This was on my mind because I just got "Brothers in Arms"
Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 11:10 AM by ginnyinWI
and watched it for the first time last night (got it for only nine bucks used on Amazon). The relationship of that crew to one another is palpable. When they show JK hugging those guys toward the end--you just know it's for real.

It was really interesting to see how each of the surviving five men in that group were changed by the war. Some just tried to drink it away, David found religion, Del got really depressed, and JK got motivated to change the war. Because of his background, his talents and his education, he had tools for making an impact on the war, which I'm sure was personally very theraputic.

edit: News item on AAR this morning: there is a new rash of Vietnam vets seeking help now for PTSD--and they think it is because of what they are seeing on the news from Iraq. It is exactly the same thing all over again.

Kerry CONTROLLED the entire thing. Imus had a little silliness - insisting Kerry thought he was President and at another point asking if he and Teresa were still ok (This really has gotten old - Kerry simply said fantasticly and mentioned they were writing a book together.

KERRY: J.D. Hayworth reminds me of Rush Limbaugh without the compassion.

I wish I could tell you how much I love this. I was just thinking about whether the left could come up with a quip-like alternative to "cut and run." Apparently, John Kerry already has. I'm thrilled.
