2. Agree!
LOL!

The offices of GOP Sens. John McCain and Chuck Hagel declined to answer, while Sen. Hillary Clinton's office reassured us, yet again, that she "remains focused on being the best Senator she can be for the people of New York." Some others didn't get back to us...

It's not that deep!

Gov. Mitt Romney (R) of Massachusetts "would take Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to Boston so they can walk the Freedom Trail together and discuss how much Iraq's path to freedom resembles America's in that both were born of sacrifice and struggle," per his office.

and :puke:

3. Kerry TOTALLY won that contest. He's loose while all the rest are
so tight, definitely make me want to barf.

Is it time yet for JK to go back on The Daily Show?

about that asshole which was clearly a joke. i bet you if one of their heroes said that about Bush they would love it.

that, we would be excoriating him (and I really dislike the Iranian president, but I really dont like the joke).

11. it could be
years ago Kerry also made some shooting Quayle joke which many would consider offensive.

i guess since it was clearly in a joking manner some don't have a problem. if he had said it seriosly or out of anger it would be different.

i can understand why people would not like it though.

13. That's nonsense! It was a light weight drum-roll joke! What's funny is
that we're approaching silly season. People have nothing left to attack so now they're making grand nonsensical pronouncements. Some of the comments are so over the top it's ridiculous. These detractors are throwing out the most outlandish BS hoping it will stick.

14. it's the "but but but he ............." thing
it was easy to attack at first but after a while it gets old and if he is doing something good it makes no sense to continue attacking someone. so they start latching on to these little things and trying to make it into something horrible. it's pathetic at this point and they come off as such losers also.

anytime you explain something to them they respond with a "but ...." and get into something else.

I get how the it works now. Open your mouth or do/say something positive and get good press, it's time to bash away, bash away, bash away, bash away all.

I am amazed at how many people didn't get the joke. - C'mon! If you followed Kerry's campaign even a little bit, you would know how funny that is.

17. I still think it was good. I think those objecting have a problem
with our good Senator anyway and would jump on him for anything. I really liked the one about being a threat to world peace.

18. I think
as one poster said, we just have to hope it doesn't get blown out of proportion or out of context. It's bad enough that everything Kerry says is distorted here and in the news media. That's where the damage is.

19. I don't see either side picking up this joke and running with it.
Those on both sides who have a problem with this joke risk drawing further attention to Kerry, with the likely possibility of positive attention from many Americans who dislike and mistrust Iran.

You can't please all the people all the time. Kerry is just being Kerry here. I worry because his statement mentioned the Iranian leader therefore he must of had him on his mind and been worried security wise about him.

20. it didn't really mean anything other than just being a joke
the President of Iran is an easy one to use when making this type of joke since nobody is likely to want to criticize Kerry for it other than few people making stupid comments online. nobody wants to be seen as siding with the him even if they aren't really siding with him. it's just not worth it.

almost anyone else including Ann Coulter, there might have been more public criticism.

21. Okay, upon further reflection and sleeping on it, I have concluded
that this wasn't one of JK's best moments. Had he said OBL, that would have been less damaging although still out of character for him, but with the Iranian president, who like or not, was democratically elected, and for which we will have to negotiate with now and in the future, this was ill-advised.

I guess what I originally liked about it was him making fun of himself and his mistake made at the Grand Canyon. I do like politicians who acknowledge their errors. But with this "macho" statement which is more like remarks Ronald Reagan or George W. Bush would make, I can gleam two things:

1. JK should stay FAR away from Bill O'Reilly. Maybe an hour with him was one hour too much. I wonder if this remark came out soon after his interview for the Factor.

2. He's still smarting from his electoral loss. If you notice, he cops a macho attitude when talking about his loss (remember from that Esquire -- "I fell on my ass with my 1972 congressional race" but said he's done better with this one), which is just a protective wall from what has to amount to a lot of pain.

So how to rectify? It's out of the bag, and it can't go back in. Nothing will happen now, but it might come out if he runs in '08. As a Senator, it probably won't make a blip on the radar screen, but as a candidate, other Dems could use it as an example of how NOT to engage in diplomacy, which before this was thought to be one of his strengths. And what if he defied all the odds and became president, and Ahmadinejad is still there? That will be very awkward . . .

22. I don't agree!
This was a joke! Saying "ill-advised" and "how to rectify" this amounts to a kind of cautiousness that's dangerous and reactionary, IMO. Look at the thread in GD, one can't even mount a credible attack on this.

I have to completely disagree with the second point, from what I read and know, that would be completely out of character for JK, he's not a person to sulk! He often talks about picking up and continuing to fight!

This is an inconsequential funny! How would this even factor into the diplomatic process? The warnings and rebuff of Ahmadinejad's comments are real and will have much more impact in any future diplomatic discussion.

23. Well, it's only an opinion, and hopefully you're right, ProSense
I'm REALLY hoping you're right. It's just the Iranian president part of it I don't like. If he told us this joke off the record, that would be one thing -- then it would be funny. But once again, I hope you're right and I am overthinking this.

24. Ahm, This seems like a tempest in a teapot to me.
The MSM and the Rethugs have already written what they will Slam Sen. Kerry on in 2007 & 2008. This is not even a blip on the radar.

I think it can be ignored. (I didn't find it funny or not funny. It seemed like an odd comment to me. I dismissed it out of hand.)

27. It was different , but besides whether you liked it or not, IMO, you
have got to wonder why he would mention the Iranian leader. I am wondering if Senator Kerry is worried about this man. He has mentioned that we can not go after or concentrate on Iran effectively, because we are bogged down in Iraq.
