Well, I can't resist this chance to post pix of my kids.
The contest theme, plus the fact I had already scanned in and printed a bunch of these for the recent wedding of the oldest (who is now the proud husband of a truly brilliant and wonderful woman) made the temptation rather strong. So here they are.

1. OMG, Art Is Fun will win any photo contest,
regardless of the theme! What an awesome picture! How long did it take to clean that art project up?

3. I like it because it shows both kids' character and strengths.
(And that particular "clean-up" was quite minor in the larger context.) As this picture might suggest, they have taken two very different paths, but both are living ethically honorable and socially constructive lives that would make anyone (any progressive) proud. One got full scholarships to a high end liberal arts college and then to UC-Berkeley Grad school; the other dropped our of HS but later went to a small college to get a degree in Herbal healing.... (Etc.) I'm pretty sure the picture gives a pretty good of which took which road.

Any one of the last four would be very tough to beat.

4. Thanks - fantastic kids, mainly.
Here's another I like, since both kids, like their parents, still enjoy hiking and camping.

6. The drool makes it real.
I can't pick one picture over another (love them all because they show my kids), but that small detail in that one makes the image more "true" and less "posed" than it might have seemed othewise. That detail, as you note, is essential to making the image what it is. When I went through some of my slides to find some that would be worth sharing at the wedding, this was one I remembered clearly and wanted to be sure to find.
