Alaska trip, part 3
Here's a shot from the Richardson Highway somewhere around Delta Junction. I'm not sure which river this is, but I liked the view.

The Trans-Alaska pipeline snaking its way from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez.

I believe this is Mt. Hayes, as near as I can tell from the Atlas.

At last a warm camp spot. This is Harding Lake state recreation area, about 70 miles south of Fairbanks, a very well maintained and beautiful campground with 80+ campsites, although we only saw a couple other campers besides us -- the advantage of camping during the week.

A couple of views of the lake.

Jax, the guard dog

We were thoroughly entertained by the gang of squirrels who soon descended upon us. I'll admit to squirrel baiting, but we gave them whole-wheat buns anyway (the remnants from the camp robber invasion). They seemed pretty happy that tourist season (and easy food) had returned.

I hope you guys aren't getting bored with these. I'm really trying to keep the number down, but it's hard to pick the best pictures from so many. I do get carried away sometimes.

2. I like the first squirrel best, too...

They were so funny - they'd sit out on the branches and just chatter away at the dog, knowing full well that he couldn't get to them. Such teases. After we went to bed that night, I heard all kinds of commotion outside so I unzipped the window to see what was going on. The squirrels and a couple of camp robbers were fighting over the bread crumbs laying around, another camp robber was perched on the side of Jax's water bowl taking a drink and one more was standing on top of the closed Coleman stove trying to peck his way inside. You wouldn't have believed the noise... Of course, my camera was locked in the truck so I couldn't get a picture, but it was pretty priceless.

3. The first and third of these...
...along with the first squirrel shot, are eminently publishable.

As to the pipeline: to paraphrase George H. W. Bush, did you see any caribou rubbing up against it and having babies? :-)

4. Uh, that would be "no"
Actually, we didn't see any caribou at all this trip, although we did see a moose, a lynx (right out in the middle of the road, and of course he disappeared into the woods before I could change lenses), several beavers, a snowshoe hare, many rabbits, three or four porcupines, squirrels, ducks of every description, lots of birds, and a marmot. But no caribou having babies. Sorry.

5. Oh, and as for publishing...
I'm thinking I might send some of these to Alaska Stock Photography http://www.alaskastock.com/Index.asp and see if I get any hits, besides setting up my SmugMug gallery. It can't hurt, I guess, although I do feel a bit intimidated by some of the other Alaska photographers that are out there.

6. We have nothing to fear but fear itself
FDR said that when someone asked him about submitting stock photography, I think.

Keep 'em comin'!
