Does anybody use special effects filters w/ their digital camera?

I'm having some "issues" when I try to use my special effects filters (star, Cokin dreams, pastel, etc). I can use the ND filters and my polarizer without a problem. But I can't even focus the camera manually if I put a special effects filter on. Do I need to set the camera to recognize an auxiliary lens, even if it's just a filter? I have all these cool filters that I used w/ my film camera and I'd love to be able to use them w/ my digital.

I just got a standard three-pack of filters -- polarizing, pink, and blue. I use them all the time, because the sun is so glaring here. All the Wichita Zoo shots I posted last week were shot using the polarizing filter. It was blindingly bright and hot out that day in Wichita, KS.
