1. Great shots!
I'm not sure why, but I especially like both water related ones.

3. Scotch tape over my Nikon D70 hotshoe...
and the flash will fire at any speed! (I usually go with 1/5000 or higher for water)

Thanks!

7. My dear HappyCynic!
Welcome to DU, and to the wonderful Photography Group!

This is probably the mellowest place in DU...

Hope you'll contribute too!

:hi:

9. Thanks for the welcome
I've actually been lurking for ages (although the Photography group is very recent for me). I'm not really a photographer but I do appreciate all the fabulous shots I've seen. This is probably the best group I've poked my head in so far - very active and filled with friendly people.

4. The water ones fascinate me too
Excuse my ignorance but how does putting tape on the hotshoe work? Does it short circuit the flash?

5. Most non-pro SLRs won't trigger flash above 1/500
Edited on Sun May-10-09 01:06 AM by Tallison
There's some mechanical/electrical engineering explanation, half of which I get, half of which I don't. It's called a camera body's 'flash sync speed,' and most prosumer cameras won't trigger flash at SS above 1/500 - far below what you need to freeze running water or other high-speed subjects.

ANYWAY, there's some glitch in the Nikon D70, wherein if you put tape over the body's front two hot shoe sensors and mount the flash as usual, you trick the camera into thinking the flash isn't there. For some reason, with the tape in place, the camera triggers the flash anyway, and at whatever shutter speed you set, up to the D70's max SS of 1/8000! Cool!

I didn't believe the tape trick would really work when I first read about it on Strobist.com, but damned if it didn't!

ETA: This technique may be worth trying on other DSLR bodies. One condition for it to apparently work is that the body must have electronic (vs. mechanical) shutters?

6. Interesting
I had no idea you could do that. How on Earth do people figure these thing out? I'm not sure if it would work on my camera (D40) and I'm too chicken to mess around with it. I"ll file the info away for later, in case I get braver. Thanks for explaining how you do that.

8. That first shot is gorgeous!
Perfect focal length, everything is crystal clear! I also like the fish fountain, with those rich blue water highlights. Very nice!
