KOEB Meeting 1/8/08 New Hampshire Primary Edition
Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 06:29 PM by BerryBush

I'm late because of the goddamned late bus. F it all to hell.

Join us for New Hampshuh results tonight!

(Chuck Todd is starting out playing it safe...he began his interview with Keith by saying "Good evening, sir," so he wouldn't call him Chris by accident.)

1. OMG, this is already starting out bad.
First Tweety is saying the Big Dog is trying to protest the rules too much and "they're acting like Kenyan politicians...complaining the election is too soon," etc. THEN they have Tom DeLay, who should be BEHIND FUCKING BARS, talking about how Hillary didn't prepare and saying, when asked by Tweety which Dem would be "more fun" to run against, saying "Both--because they're both LIBERAL, which means they want more taxes, more spending, bigger government, so it will be easy to beat them. But Obama is more liberal."

WHY IS THIS CROOK ASSHOLE ON MY TV CLAIMING TO BE AN EXPERT ON ANYTHING WHEN HE SHOULD BE WEARING AN ORANGE JUMPSUIT?!?!?!?!?!?

Thank God Keith isn't interviewing him. He should be turning his back.

2. Oh, and he defines a Republican "moderate" as someone "who's not as strong"
as he should be when it comes to social issues, less government, etc. Oh, and Tweety asks him whether Newt will drop in like Mighty Mouse to save the day if he sees fit, and DeLoser implies he might.

What an ass.

OK, here's Stretch. Whew. Anything beats DeLay. He's kind of acting amused by the Repubs jockeying to be the "candidate of change."

3. I LOVE KEITH!!!!!!!
He just made a point with Tweety--said "You were just saying the Clintons are questioning how the game is played, which you implied Americans never do, and then look who we just had on here next--Tom DeLay!!!!!" (aka "The Gerrymanderer"!!!)

Tweety: "You are observant, sir."

From waaaay downtown--BAAANG!

4. I'll keep going to keep everyone posted who's not here yet.
Keith just interviewed a guy at Obama headquarters. Before that, he talked to David Shuster. Nothing particularly notable said there. People are excited, yadda yadda.

Oh, and Keith still has that zit, or whatever it is, on his forehead. But he looks great. He's wearing the same ensemble as in tonight's picture.

Now Dee Dee Myers talks about what the Clintons will do next: bring in new voices, broaden her circle of advisers.

5. Dee Dee says Dems probably feel it's not good to have too early a coronation
of a candidate before a lot of people have had their say.

Oh boy...Keith goes back to the crying clip from yesterday. Going to ask Dee Dee what she thinks.

6. Keith asks two questions:
1. Was not "It's very personal to me" Edwards' theme?

2. Right out of this emotional stuff, she says "Some of us are right and some of us are wrong, some of us are ready and some of us are not"--direct hit on Obama--was that good?

Dee Dee: People reacted positively to seeing her vulnerability. Also, it's not just personal for Edwards, it's personal for all of them. But Hillary needs to let people see how personal this is for THEM. She has to make it about voters choosing what's best for them to get back in this. She can do it, but she needs to make it about what's best for them.

8. Back to Tweety. Dee Dee just told him he was WRONG when he said "Everyone
has always said Hillary was a frontrunner!" She says no, not a year ago!

He calls it revisionism! FIGHT! FIGHT! She's really pissed at him! "You asked me a question--will you let me answer?"

She maintains Hillary was not considered "inevitable" and "the frontrunner" until about a year ago.

She says Obama will be stronger if he has to fight it out with the other candidates.

Tweety STILL insists he is right and Dee Dee is wrong. Sheesh!

9. Now they switch to Kelly O'Donnell with John McCain.
Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 07:00 PM by BerryBush
Oh, who cares? He's got lots of good-luck charms, his campaign has been through lots of ups and downs, he might get the energy here to live another day.

Tweety now asks KEITH whether HE doesn't agree with him that Hillary has always been the frontrunner! Keith does agree--"She was the frontrunner possibly before the nomination of John Kerry!" Maybe so, but Keith would have respectfully disagreed with Dee Dee rather than shouting her down like Tweety did.

Tweety calls the idea that Hillary is only a recent frontrunner "spin" and "dishonest." Keith asks "What if this is not a bad night for Hillary and we've had nuclear weapons tossed around all day?" Tweety says he's "stunned" by some of the things coming out of the Clintons today.

Oh please...

Keith says that an "outsider's opinion" ("which I consider myself"--Ridge laughs) has been that McCain sticks to the same talking points no matter what happens. Ridge polishes Gramps' image as "a consistent conservative with courage and candor." Gag me. Ridge goes on and on rhapsodizing and Keith has to cut him off for a break. Whew!

170. Not really
It was fun to watch Tweety and Dee Dee get into it, because it was so typical of Tweety's refusal to listen without interrupting. But it is quite disingenuous for Hillary to pretend she was anything but the favorite up to now.

13. Lee Cowan reports long lines anywhere you can go to see Obama
and the seemingly big turnout, oftentimes of people who have not been politically involved before.

Tweety asks if Richard Holbrook is at the front of the line, because everyone assumes he will be the next secretary of state no matter what. Cowan doesn't get it. Keith laughs.

Andrea Mitchell now, says the Clintons will have to adjust to Hillary no longer being "inevitable." They are stopping controlling the campaign so tightly.

Tweety talks about McCain again...sigh. "Making himself available seems to have lifted him. Hillary's been acting like a movie star waiting for a movie to come out. Do you think she'll change that policy?" Andrea says she already has, and candidates are better when they don't just get self-reinforcing info from their advisers, but listen to a wider circle of people. She says what PRESIDENTS also need to do is get a wider variety of opinions because otherwise it doesn't serve very well!

14. Keith asks Andrea now "Was Hillary ever the front runner, or did we just dream it?
Because Chris and I thought the oxygen had been shut off here!"

Andrea confirms, yes--she was even in the NH lead before Obama began pulling away.

Ron Allen on independents. Says that on the Repub side they're going for Gramps, not Mitts. Mitts is in trouble. Losing again will NOT be good.

16. Keith makes some historical reference to Henry Cabot Lodge. I think it's in connection
to Mittens and how his familiarity with local voters is affecting things. Allen says voters are not thinking of the past but of the future. This is not turning out how Mittens planned.

18. Oh no, it's off to Tucker at McCain headquarters.
Keith implies Gramps was at the shallow end of the pool for a long time. Well, Tucker looks like he's in the KIDDIE pool. At least it's where he belongs.

Tweety asks what happens if McCain wins. Tucker says that means Rudy has to bank it all on Florida. If he wins, he gets taken seriously. But if Gramps wins here, Repubs may "defer to the elder statesman" as "the last man standing."

Tweety says this reminds him of when some really pathetic boxer became champion...then he knew the swamp had been drained. Keith points out that other eventual nominees have started out badly and then caught up. Tweety says he thinks there are a lot of Repugs in NH who "like mavericks" but it's always hard to be a successful maverick.

Keith asks whether we don't do a candidate a favor somewhat by sticking a fork in them too soon and declaring them done so that they end up surprising us with a big comeback. Tweety says maybe.

Back to Stretch.

And I feel just like you...in Ohio we may get to decide the election but our primary isn't until March 4 so it's all over by then...then again, as an independent I can't vote for a candidate anyway!

25. With 1% of results in, Obama and Gramps are running away with it.
But really...1%...

Norah O'Donnell blathers for a while with some stats about voter attitudes, then we get treated to Tim Russert. Lucky us. *sigh*

He says Gramps and Mittens have both purchased TV time in Michigan! Look out, Sha-sha!!!! Duck and cover!

Says there are not many evangelicals in NH, which is bad news for Huckabee. For Dems, he thinks the percentage of female vote will make a difference, and the youth vote. This vote may tell us more about which way they are really going, depending on their percentage of turnout.

Tom Brokaw (I want to do an impression of him here) says some of Mittens' friends have advised him against trying to win Michigan but he's not listening. Also, says if Hillary loses, whether it's by single or double digits will be telling, and also, if she does, will she be able to present herself as the "insurgent candidate" come Tsunami Tuesday?

27. Keith asks whether it's a risky strategy to say, as Hillary essentially is,
"Vote for me by Tsunami Tuesday or I go home." Timmeh says yes. Big risks out West, and in California and NY. But the Clintons say they have money, they will go on, they will retool, they will reframe. Big Dog is really standing strong.

Tom says Hillary is losing Dems who used to be solidly behind Hillary to Obama because he's "acceptable" to them, and Hill runs the real risk of bleeding lots of supporters if she doesn't finish at least a strong second tonight. There's also the question of qualitative stuff: who can win the general, who can draw the young voters, etc.

52. Early returns are making Hillary look much more competitive here
but then again, it looked competitive in Iowa for a while too.

Time will tell.

Definitely not a good state for Huckabee, and Rudy looks like toast.
