28. There's been some discussion about the two places we're thinking about

The Residence Inn that's just opening on Times Square or the Ramada New Yorker at 34th & 8th.

38. Hmmm, I dunno that Ramada, has it been renovated lately?
Let's see Times Sq has a lot of fun stuff and greaaat shopping + B'way + cool restuarnts now and 34th is a bit on the decline.
also Times Sq has more train connections everywhere, and ehem, buses to Seacaucus. LOL.
It's moot to me, I can get home easily at any hour, either place. I have a short safe trip home, so no worries there.

40. I've been leaning toward the brand new Res Inn
Edited on Tue Dec-06-05 08:28 PM by SharonRB
but Pats suggested the other one, too, so we're going to check them both out and see what DG's cousin might be able to do for us at the Res Inn. I think the Ramada has been updated, but I'm not sure how long ago. However, if you know that the area is better in Times Square, maybe we should go that way.

Are you going to stay with us at the hotel or go home at night? Bunny is planning to stay with us.

50. I'm so close to home (and laid off again) so, I can't stay....
but in terms of walking out the door and being hit with a cool vibe, Times Square is it.
It just looks a lot more impressive. It has a lot of cool stuff right there. 34th Street has Madison Sq Garden, a couple of H+M's and Macy's, the Empire State Building a few blocks away....but it is seedier than Times Sq theses days. and 8th Av is a bit away from the action/ cafes/ resturants convienient subways. Trust me, I know the hoods well, been working forever right between the two of them. I always work between 37th + 40 th and commute through 34th or 42nd... so ask me!

62. if you don't get a deal, also check out Hotwire-
they are very aboveboard and are pretty specific about the quality level, location etc.
In DC my room was like 65% off. In Feb you should be able to get a deal.

63. The only drawback is that it's Presidents' Day weekend
so I'm not sure the deals are as good. The rates for the studios, sleeping three, weren't bad at the Resident Inn. I think there were studios for $243.00 a night -- split three ways that's not bad, especially for Manhattan. The only thing that was better about the New Yorker was that there are a few people who want to get their own rooms and there were some less expensive rooms there. I think $143 or so.

71. the only bad thing w/ Hotwire is that the deals aren't up until just a
month beforehand. so looking now will probably net you nothing. if you can reserve another place without a deposit, and then meet here and give hotwire a shot and see. they do not give you the name of hotel till you buy it, but it ususally at least 50% off. and they tell you the hood and star rating, sometimes you can tell which one it is.
wow, 143 is cheap!

is that we will probably need more than 2 rooms. if we have to make several different bids, we might end up in different hotels. :(

Edited on Tue Dec-06-05 09:21 PM by bettyellen
the way they describe them, you can tell it's the same one. each one is listed with a seperate description and price. if you do at the same time, you should be able to hit the same place. not 100% of a guarantee, but if you don't have to prepay it's worth a look. i have to look and see which hotels do them- those that do don't do "listed" promotions. i'll find out what i can, okay?

68. I read something about this earlier today somewhere on DU
I guess the Jesus gets stolen every year and her daughter said it hadn't been stolen yet and suggested she steal it.

74. They stole Frank Sinatra's Sidewalk "Star" here and guess how they caught
the people?
they ordered takeout and the delivery guy had read about it and called the cops. Idiots had it right there in their hallway.

78. So, it's just a tradition, I gather
sort of like stealing your rival football team's mascot?

And in this case, there's this weird tradition that's formed of someone stealing Jesus every year...so she just thought this year, she'd be the one?

And all those ads for Prilosec OTC with the Packers fan are a pretty blatant ploy, too.

was that Keith tried to play it so completely straight and dry, yet you could see that smile just barely held back all the way through.

I LOVE it when he's impish.

Keith had the SAME look and sound in his voice tonight handing off to Billy Bush as he did last night with the new chick!

This can mean only one thing: Billy Bush is his new love!

Yes, look for Keith and Billy to follow Elton and his groom down the aisle soon.

Then again, it could be said that that's about the happiest Keith has looked when forced to deal with a member of the Bush family in a LONG time.

What can you say? For a newscaster, he's a good actor!
