2005: Annus Horriblis
Here's just a few reasons we should all be glad 2005 will soon be over:

  • Hurricane Katrina and the destruction of New Orleans

  • The Bush administration's piss-poor response to Hurricane Katrina

  • $3.00 a gallon for gas - and that's just in Texas

  • The illegal wiretaps ordered by Bush himself

  • The CIA "black site" prisons scattered throughout Europe and the Middle East

  • The Bush administration's refusal to acknowledge any torture on its part

  • The pro-science professor in Topeka, KS who was beaten and forced to resign

  • Pat Robertson's fatwa against Dover, PA for keeping "Intelligent Design" out of school

  • Revelations about the use of white phosphorous on Iraqi citizens by US troops

  • The shifting of the Courts of Appeals and the Supreme Court to the far right

  • The continued assault on the middle class in America

  • The non-existent "War on Christmas" that managed to sap our holiday spirits

  • The stripping of medical financial aid away from the eldest and poorest Americans - just before Christmas

And just think - we have at least one more year of this to endure until November, when we will hopefully get vote in a Democratic Congress.

1. Be careful what you wish for
Yes, 2005 is finally over, but 2006 has just begun. No reason to think it won't be at least as harrowing, if not more so, than the year we've just completed.

2. That's what I just said
2006 is already shaping up to be a real piece of work. But that's why we've got to come out swinging. The Democratic Party played patty-cake in 2004 when they should have been playing tackle football. Hopefully enough of the higher-ups have learned from their mistakes.
