Poll question: "Had Enough? Vote Democratic." or "Had Enough? Vote Democrat." - ?
Edited on Wed May-31-06 08:49 PM by Skip Intro
You're going to put one on your car in the form of a bumpersticker. Which do you choose?

I ask because I wonder which is, whether grammatically correct or not, more easily accessible. When you say, "Democratic," are you talking about a form of government or a political party? I know the answer, but do most people? New people are coming aboard. Former bush voters, former repubs. Do they know the that "Democratic" means party and not government philosophy?

I personally lean toward "Vote Democrat" - because its clear to more people, more "new" voters, imho, however technically incorrect.

Maybe this matters about as much as having the toilet paper roll from over the top or from underneath, but clarity of message, especially the message that there is a way to vote if you've, "had enough," is paramount.

ok, so hence the question....

3. I like Elect Democrats best.
Vote Democrat sounds ignorant. I hate it. It offends my ear and makes me feel uncomfortable at a gut level. It panders to stupidity.

8. Used that way democrat is a freaking insult.
I'll never forget the first time I heard "democrat" used in place of "democratic" - Ronald Reagan used the phrase "Democrat Congress" in a tone dripping disdain. "Democratic" is a good thing to be, which is why pukes can't bring themselves too say the word. "Democrat" is a put-down.

16. Exactly. We should say vote Democratic to remind everyone that
the Democrats are the only Democratic party of the two.

That's why the Republicans started calling us the "Democrat party." They don't want us to associate ourselves with democracy.

19. YUP!
And we just let them do it, like so much else. They should be corrected every time. Every. Single. Time.

7. Yes.... that is good!
"Vote Democratic" almost sounds like an oxymoron since the evil forces took over the voting process.

18. I think we should start using "democrat" rather than "democratic"
in order to negate the negative connotation Newty has tried to invest it with. Maybe we should also can the wimpy "progressive" handle, and reclaim "liberal" as well. The use of "progressive" suggests that we're trying to disavow something about "liberalism".

23. I agree we should reclaim liberal
and the use of progressive dilutes the liberal message and implies that we're somehow not ok with being liberal.

But I do think we should use Democratic. Democrat IMO sounds like 1 singular person or idea as opposed to the many philosphies of Democratic.

Edited on Wed May-31-06 09:19 PM by Dr.Phool
Better off?
Vote John Russell for Congress!
Had enough?

On edit: It didn't come out right. Better off? and Had Enough? are on the left side, and Vote John Russell is on the right side.

11. Thom Hartmann talks about

repugs shortening it to Democrat Party when they talk about us rather than Democratic Party (which is the proper name of the party) in a kind of mocking and insulting way. I refuse to buy into anything that they try to use against us. So in my book we're the Democratic party and it would be "Vote Democratic" although individual party members can be referred to as Democrats.

13. "Vote Democrat", because there are a fair amount of thick-headed people
out there who won't understand the message at a glance. Honestly. Don't underestimate how many dumb people there are.

17. Here's why I prefer my simple "had enough?" sticker:
Embarrasses and pisses off the wingnuts, because they know the implicit message is to impeach, or vote Dem at the very least.
