What I learned watching CNN for two minutes this morning
YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN!

DON'T EXPECT ANYONE TO COME AND SAVE YOU!

YOU SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THIS ALREADY!

YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN!

BE PREPARED!

THEY PUT IT IN WRITING IT WAS RIGHT THERE FOR ALL TO SEE-YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN!

IT WAS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO KNOW THAT

IT WAS WIDELY KNOWN FOR YEARS DIDN'T YOU KNOW THAT?

YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN DON'T EXPECT ANYONE TO SAVE YOU!

3. So are we back to building our very own bomb shelters
like we did in the 60's? And stocking the shelves to last at least a few months?

Whoa Nellie! Is this exciting or what?

4. Heard the same thing on NPR this morning, in regards to
hurricane season. It's infuriating to see how little the federal government cares. :banghead:

15. I think it is retroactive CYA over Katrina and proactive "Not our faults"
for everything else.

Don't forget it was just a few weeks ago that the big Bird Flu plan was unveiled and it said "We aren't responsible for anything. Don't call us we are not answering the phone" I am not expecting miracles here just plain competence in a dumbed down keep-it-simple-stupid world that we live it that is the least we can ask and the least is apparently what we are going to get. The bare minimum.

5. And what kind of dupe doesn't buy an emergency kit
Soledad has one for her and her 4 kids, what the hell is wrong with the rest of you!!! :sarcasm:

I never watch her, she is just a self-righteous judgmental twit.

8. You mean you don't know???
What's the matter with you? :spank: (kidding)

Apparently, we actually need three, one at work, one at home, and one in the car. And everybody who can afford to do all of this really should, it's just that everybody can't and Soledad was so condescending when she was talking about her emergency kit.

13. All disasters natural or otherwise
We've been living in youronyourownistan for years, the sad thing is most people have been too busy with popular culture to pay much attention.
We live in the asshole of tornado alley, we're on our own, flood, we're on our own, our insurance company will smile when they take our check, then smile big when they find a reason to decline our claim.
We live in youronyourownistan.

17. Compare the post 9/11 duct tape warning to this
Back then the feds were all about telling us exactly what we needed and how to use it. Now it is "you should have known that" and not necessarily from their post9/11 info blitz.

The funny part is that here on DU the big joke was that anyone who lives in tornado alley already had emergency kits ready to go. It was hilarious to them to even have to consider having one. The same went for people who live in bitterly cold areas of the country. I, myself, have always had some sort of emergency kit in the trunk of my car because you just never know.

I think (as I said above) that this is CYA for Katrina and their attempt to get the government out of this field of work too. "Starve the beast" as Paul Krugman calls it.

All that aside the "you are on your own" is widely known but when you tell people to go to spot A and they necessarily can't possibly bring everything they might need you someone is responsible for providing the basic necessities of existence and that shouldn't take 5 days.

21. During Isabel, we only lost our power for two hours.
My poor dad, on the other hand, in the nursing home didn't have power, water or ice for almost a week. So much for the government restoring normalcy to those most in need.

I ended up diverting a truck load of ice from Winn Dixie to the nursing home...at my own expense.

18. This is a free country, I would prefer to be on my own
Expecting big daddy government to "protect us" is what leads to the Bushco power plays. Terra, terra, terra, to "protect us" they need the "tools" - authoritarian power.
