CIA Leak Case Heats Up Hazy Summer

By JOHN COCHRAN

Capital Awaits Word of Whether Rove Will Be Indicted

WASHINGTON, May 31, 2006 — Thermometers have finally hit the 90's, and Washington is getting the lazy, sultry look that comes as May dissolves into June.

We Washingtonians tend to slow down, but the news doesn't. And it won't this summer either, with a decision expected from Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald that will finally determine whether a top White House aide will face serious federal charges in the CIA leak case.

Those old enough to remember Watergate will recall the fiercely hot summer of '74, when scandal revelations brought down Richard Nixon's presidency.

Now Washington waits to see what this summer holds for the Bush White House. No one believes the scandal will approach the grand scale of Watergate, but when it hits it will certainly qualify as breaking news.

13. There won't be one

Patrick Fitzgerald, if I remember correctly, is not bound to write a report. It's the difference between being a special prosecutor (the statute expired,) and a special counsel, if I remember (again,) correctly.

I'm sure that H2OMan could enlighten us on this further.

14. That is correct.
If we all think back to the press conference, a journalist asked Mr. Fitzgerald about a report.

Q: I think you, kind of, answered this but I assume that you have no plans and don't even think you'd be allowed to issue a final report of any sort.

PF: You're correct. But let me explain.

I think what people may be confused about is that reports used to be issued by independent counsels. ... That statute lapsed, I'm not an independent counsel, and I do not have the authority to write a report, and, frankly, I don't think I should have that authority. I think we should conduct this like any other criminal investigation: charge someone or be quiet.

7. If convicted, he'll be pardoned..
I'm betting the indictments will be handed down shortly before the November elections. September/October feels about right to me.

21. I don't think the Dems can move the election date towards some unknown
date when Fitz may indict. Dems don't have control over the investigation. How don't see how they could time anything?

24. Okay - I was being facetious. Dems don't have any control over what
the justice department does either. How could they possibly time it? Why would you say that?

9. John Cochran needs a good fact checker

>No one believes the scandal will approach the grand scale of Watergate,<

Really, Mr. Cochran? That's interesting. Anyone who comprehends what they read would know that the CIA leak case is WORSE than Watergate. Our national security was compromised in the interest of a political payback. The work that Valerie Plame and Brewster Jennings was doing is irretrievably compromised as a result.

Maybe the heat's getting to him already.

11. If it doesn't 'approach the grand scale of Watergate'
it will only be because the news media has NEVER done it's job reporting about the crimes and lies of this administration. Those crimes have so surpassed Watergate it is truly, not even funny.

15. nice bit of pre-spin, wasn't that? Makes me wonder if they've decided
to start "preparing" us for the "shocks" that lie ahead... but I forget, they aren't going to be anywhere near so important as what happened in the summer of '74. Sounds like the good ship WH is hoping that throwing someone else overboard will keep the wreck afloat...
