Salon picks up DU post: Bush thought 9/11 ended on a "humorous note"

Bush Jaw-Dropper: 9/11/01 "Ended on a Relatively Humorous Note" - It's an understatement to say that there's a gaping chasm in the way supporters and detractors view George W. Bush. His followers see him as a visionary leader, a pious, resolute hero. For the most part, the establishment media have been happy to push this myth. Bush's opponents, on the other hand, see him as a callous and dangerously inept man, monumentally unqualified for the most important job in the world.

The online community was making the case against Bush long before his poll numbers dropped into the low 30's. Democratic Underground's "10-percenters" were the determined few who didn't buy into the post-9/11 Bush hype. Digby described it best: "I know that without us there would have been virtually no critical voices during the long period between 2001 and the presidential primary campaign during 2003. We were it. The media were overt, enthusiastic Bush boosters for well over two years and created an environment in which Democratic dissent (never welcome) was non-existent to the average American viewer. In fact, it took Bush's approval rating falling to below 40% before they would admit that he was in trouble....

3. 2 comments: Way to go DU!
I am glad DU has been there and is still here. The light in the darkness.

Now for the Humor thing on 9/11: Only someone in that position who knew there was no real danger for the US could laugh on such a day. If the nation was truly under threat of additional attacks, a normal leader could not have even gone to bed and slept let alone laugh at a time like that.

11. Excellent point. At that time, no one knew for sure that there would
not be another attack. But Bush seemed to know. I live in Manhattan, and the night of 9/11 I slept with the radio on all night tuned to a news station. I think a lot of people in NYC and DC slept with one eye open that night. But the guy responsible for our security didn't seem to have much troubling his meager little mind. You would think that at least he would be unable to sleep knowing that 3,000 American civilians were slaughtered on his watch. Is this freak even human?

12. I think most of America had trouble sleeping that night
Not know what was to come following an attack on our nation. I think we all were a little on edge in the days following 9/11.
For this to be published that bu$h found humor does nothing but proves, to me if no one else, that bu$h knew what to expect.

17. not just Americans, either ...
When they closed US airspace, a lot of the planes ended up in Canada. All those stranded passengers had to be housed and fed, so people in Halifax, Gander, etc. were rushing around that night trying to make arrangements for thousands of unexpected visitors. The scientist Stephen Jay Gould was one of those who were stranded, and he wrote a very moving thank-you piece, including this quote: "May it then be recorded; may it be inscribed forever in the Book of Life; Bless the good people of Halifax who did not sleep, who took strangers into their homes, who opened their hearts and their shelters, who rushed in enough food to feed and army -- and above all who listened with a simple empathy which brought this tough and fully grown man to tears, over and over again."

21. Driving to work the next morning was like being in a funeral
procession, everyone was traveling under the speed limit and stopping when the light turned yellow-so unlike Florida.

6. 2001 ended and Bush said he "had a fabulous year..."
when interviewed. No somber reflection on those lost on 9/11 or mourning in America. No, he and Laura had a "fabulous year."

"But all in all, it's been a fabulous year for Laura and me. We're so grateful to be living in this compound and I'm grateful to be working in this office. It's a joy to walk in here every morning, realizing that I'm the President of the greatest country on the face of the Earth."

8. And never forget the joke about WMDs under his desk.
What a shameful way for the "leader of the free world" to behave. Bush is a total embarrassment to any really patriotic, thinking American. He is a war criminal, liar, and incompetent fool.

20. and the "trifecta" joke
He loved this joke so much, he told it at least 8 times. And, this is also important, his hand picked Repugn audiences roared in laughter every time.

I'll bet that story really warmed the hearts of the families of the 9/11 victims. Thanks for helping America laugh, George and Laura, America's "Fun Couple!"

Am sure he used this amusing story to comfort those sobbing at the end of the private WH screening.

9. I remember thinking on 9-11 ...
... that this would wake the country up as to what a lazy incompetent phony Bush is, and that he would be held directly responsible for allowing the terrorists to strike New York and Washington.

That so many fell for the ensuing Rove bullshit is one of the bitterest disappointments of my life.

13. I didn't sleep well for weeks....
...continually waking up to switch on CNN to make sure there were no more attacks. And I live 3000 miles away!

I finally had to put my TV on I Love Lucy reruns at night to be assured of some normalcy and comfort.

18. Same with me. I actually had to go and see a Doctor to get some
meds for the anxiety...I couldn't sleep! I think part of it was that my wife was pregnant at the time and we were expecting our first child.

14. Thanks for this find.
I have been trying for a long time to get people to understand what a self-involved, uncaring man Bush is. So many people have been programmed by the media into believing the myth, that he is a strong leader with their best interests always at heart. I'm glad more people I know are finally coming around, yet I wish it had been done before the last election.

Bush is a sick, sick man. And just because Laura Bush has that smile permanently attached to her face doesn't make her any less of a sick person.

19. The "humorous note" is a flat out lie.
President Bush: But the day ended on a relatively humorous note. The agents said, "You'll be sleeping downstairs. Washington's still a dangerous place." And I said no, I can't sleep down there, the bed didn't look comfortable. I was really tired, Laura was tired, we like our own bed. We like our own routine. You know, kind of a nester. Like the way things are. I knew I had to deal with the issue the next day and provide strength and comfort to the country, and so I needed rest in order to be mentally prepared. So I told the agent we're going upstairs, and he reluctantly said okay. Laura wears contacts, and she was sound asleep. Barney was there. And the agent comes running up and says, "We're under attack. We need you downstairs," and so there we go. I'm in my running shorts and my T-shirt, and I'm barefooted. Got the dog in one hand, Laura had a cat, I'm holding Laura --

Mrs. Bush: I don't have my contacts in, and I'm in my fuzzy house slippers --

President Bush: And this guy's out of breath, and we're heading straight down to the basement because

There were no planes in the air the night or 911, much less unidentified planes.
