Bush braces nation for Iraq massacre trial...
'President George W Bush prepared America yesterday for the prosecution of marines alleged to have committed the worst coalition massacre in three years of war in Iraq.

He promised that he would punish anyone found guilty of involvement in the killings last November, in which 24 civilians were shot dead in the town of Haditha.'

5. Yeah, let's see this punishment
Where were their officers? Had their officers reported the problems with this group to their superiors? Did they do anything about it? How high does this go?

Actually, from the comments I've seen from the military, it looks like they're going to throw the book at these guys. But it's going to tear the army apart. And it is quite likely to be as serious to the country at large as My Lai was.

11. well, before we start invoking the seriousness of My Lai...
...recall that only ONE person ever received any punishment for the deaths of the people of My Lai, and his punishment was laughably lenient. Lt. Calley spent three years under modified house arrest, mostly watching television in his own livingroom, before Richard Nixon commuted his sentence. Calley is a free man in Georgia today.

By that standard I'm not expecting much from the Iraqi My Lai.

Edited on Thu Jun-01-06 04:51 PM by mike_c
...or his perogative to punish anyone for Haditha? Oh, sorry-- I forgot, he's King.

on edit-- in a just world Bush will one day have Haditha presented as evidence against him during his own war crimes trial.

26. When he says those responsible will be punished.....
He may mean America in general.
To begin with our moral standing in the world has taken another serious downturn because of this revelation.

It doesn't help to blame a few Marines, reporters, or John Murtha if we have to wear a t-shirt with a maple leaf when traveling abroad.

The blame for what became of a once great, proud nation falls on one man's shoulders...and he doesn't intend to change course.
