Bush to back gay marriage ban amendment
Bush to back gay marriage ban amendment
Posted 6/1/2006 9:04 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush will promote a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage on Monday, the eve of a scheduled Senate vote on the cause that is dear to his conservative backers.

The amendment would prohibit states from recognizing same-sex marriages. To become law, the proposal would need two-thirds support in the Senate and House, and then be ratified by at least 38 state legislatures.

It stands little chance of passing the 100-member Senate, where proponents are struggling to get even 50 votes. Several Republicans oppose the measure, and so far only one Democrat — Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska — says he will vote for it.

The Senate Judiciary Committee approved the amendment on May 18 along party lines after a shouting match between a Democrat and the chairman, Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa. He bid Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., "good riddance" after Feingold declared his opposition to the amendment and his intention to leave the meeting.

Bush aides said he would be making his remarks on the subject Monday.

1. Of course he will
He needs to shore up his base after pissing them off by not authorizing their reasonable and measured "Shoot Hispanics on Sight" program.

8. Yes and it's too bad that it's proved to be such and effective
wedge issue. Are we really living in a country where 50% of the population consists of shameless BIGOTS?
The 2004 presidential election would seem to indicate that's the case.

I can hear the line in church "voter guides" around the country now, "We know your tired of this administration, tired of the war, tired of the lying, tired of the constant scandals (hey we don't believe in science but that doesn't mean we don't read the polls) but if you don't get out and vote again this fall all the hard work you put into keeping them homos from getting married in the last election will have been for nothing!"

The question is will it motivate the undecideds and non-fanatic fundies this time around? I mean the pukes can't win on 29% approval ratings and if this "tried and true" hot button issue fails this time around then that's all they are likely to get...

3. Bush' Speech

"Its very important that my base, (christians, free republic members, kkk associates, white supremacists and unconcerned millionaires) know that I hate homosexuals as much as they do. And as we discuss the "christian" value of hate let us not lose focus on illegal immigrants. It is a "conservative" value to alter the constitution to reflect our hate, that the constitution exists only to provide freedom to people like us (all 29% of the US population.) God bless you and god bless merka." Nice sheet!

4. You know what's even more sad?
That Monday is the 25th Anniversary of the first reported case of AIDS. So instead of taking an opportunity to show respect to a community that came together to take care of one another, and to force the government to start paying attention to a virus that was killing them by the thousands, Bush decides to give the gay community a punch in the face.

5. No doubt
that will be a cause for celebration in the American "christian" community; as they prance along valuing only their own lives.
